I can’t read behind the paywall, so I don’t know if the author makes this point, but the violent depravity of Soviet communism was also responsible to a considerable extent for the rise of Nazism and other fascisms. Without the plague of the Comintern and the push for “revolution” across Europe and worldwide, it is very unlikely that we would have seen the rise of Hitler or Mussolini.
Communists are atheists because it allows them to treat human beings as pieces of meat, to be disposed of as the state sees fit. Not one single communist regime, past or present, has ever upheld individual rights against the state. No communist regime has ever recognized the Rule of Law, that the state is bound by the law as much as the individual citizens. And no communist court has ever placed a limit on the state by ruling in favor of the individual citizen.
