Ed Gillespie, campaigning in a treacherous political environment defined by an unpopular president of his own party, ran the only race he reasonably could. He distanced himself from Donald Trump personally, hoping to lessen his losses in heavily Democratic Northern Virginia, while hitting some Trumpian notes on crime and immigration to appeal to the president’s base.
Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, the self-declared keeper of the Trumpist flame, believed Gillespie had cracked the code by fashioning a “Trumpism without Trump.” He managed, per Bannon, to close the enthusiasm gap “by rallying around the Trump agenda,” and Democrats needed to be “very, very worried.”
At least that was the party line until the race was called soon after the polls closed at 7 p.m. Then, Gillespie became an establishment tool who had betrayed Trumpism and the president. A Bannon spokesman blasted Gillespie for allegedly having no message and being inauthentic, which is quite the charge coming from people who will change what they are saying on a dime, depending on the imperatives of the political spin of the hour.
That aside, the Virginia race revealed a problem with the Trumpism without Trump construct — namely, that it’s not really possible.
First, it’s not going to be convincing to Trump-haters. Gillespie — even when talking about cracking down on MS-13 — isn’t the slightest bit Trumpy. He’s earnest, wonky and friendly.

The Uniparty is determined to not let us elect anyone who will side with the citizens and the rule of law against illegal aliens and their employers.
They have a bipartisan plan to change the demographics of the country against the will of the citizens.
They have been manipulating elections for decades preventing us from stopping the illegal alien inundation.
We are usually only allowed to vote for candidates who support open borders/amnesty.
They have marginalized or ruined everyone who has stood in their way.
Trump was an anomaly that they do not intend to allow again.
They have been purposely flooding the country with foreigners (and they are voting) to steal our country from us.
Gillespie was Cheap Labor Express stooge and we all knew he was only using the MS-13 ads to get elected.
He would have been supporting amnesty and opposing removing those illegal aliens not yet convicted of other crimes if he had been elected.
Zebras don’t change their stripes.

According to Lowrey and his fellow NeverTrumpers, Trump is a disaster for the party and it’s screwed whether you embrace his agenda or try to distance yourself from it. The only recourse is to wait until Trump leaves office.
these people are crazy..Trump saved their asses last November...they have more power than ever before. They just cant admit they were wrong, and that they are losing “their” party...IT ALL started with Eric Cantor, yet they still wont admit it. That senate is a nasty, vile garbage dump...they all need to be primed out of there.
Perhaps it just means that Virginia voters were able to spot a guy who was lying through his teeth at them.
