Papa John’s issues Twitter apology for ‘divisive’ NFL, anthem remarks

Papa John’s apologized Tuesday for comments made by CEO John Schnatter, who had blamed the NFL and protesting players for the pizza chain’s struggles this football season.

In a three-tweet mea culpa, the Louisville-based company did a 180 and said it supported players’ right to protest.

During an earnings call two weeks ago, Schnatter lashed out at kneeling players and league officials for not solving the controversy.

“The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive. That was definitely not our intention,” Papa John’s tweeted.

“We believe in the right to protest inequality and support the players’ movement to create a platform for change. We also believe, as Americans, we should honor our anthem There should be a way to do both.”

The pizza powerhouse ended with, “We will work with the players and league to find a positive way forward. Open to ideas from all. Except neo-nazis.”

The chain then used an emoji for the middle finger, “those guys.”

Some on Twitter weren’t buying Papa John’s apology.

“You don’t need to `work with’ them. They want to protest. They don’t need your permission or to compromise to benefit you,” according to Hollywood writer Rachel Kiley.

One Twitter user wanted to know if Schnatter had any role in flipping off Nazis.

Papa John’s responded: “He helped write this post – yes.”

In a conference call with investors, Schnatter – who appears in many TV ads for his company – blamed NFL leadership for not taking decisive action.

“Leadership starts at the top, and this is an example of poor leadership,” Schnatter said. “The NFL has hurt Papa John’s shareholders.”

Papa Johns has more than a NFL issue.

My eldest is 1 of their store managers, they can’t make payroll, he has to pay them out of the store cash register, himself included, even the bank they are drawn on won’t cash them. Can’t get broken equipment fixed, and they are health code violations or dangerous ones. Can’t keep employees when you can’t pay them. Often no delivery drivers. Fridge out, electric out. Corporate writes it up, nothing gets fixed. They work him 6 days a week, Sunday is his only day off, not a good day to look for another job when you had a hard time finding this one because you are pushing 50. Never mind you’ve managed stores for 25 yrs and always turned them around and made a profit.

Papa John’s has had the worst pizza for a while now, imo.

They went downhill before the NFL problems started, imo.

They have way more problems than the NFL, imo.

In my town some pizzerias offer discounts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays - their slow days. Sunday, Monday, and Thursday are all “football days”, and if people aren’t watching then they aren’t selling...

If you politicize large pizza chains by their respective CEO/Owners actions and ideology, then it would be crystal clear which chain conservatives should choose to patronize.

You are being divisive if you challenge the insanity of the lefties. Otherwise, whatever you do is fine. /s

> Open to ideas from all. Except neo-nazis.

A lot of lefties call all of us Trump voters neo-nazis. Is he talking about us in this tweet? Do lefty readers think he means us? Lefties have made another term useless.

By calling out one group, I’ll assume he’s open to ideas from racists (non-white only?), communists, police-haters, and any other lefty-ists.

Too bad. I’m one of the few people I know who like(d) their pizza. But I have plenty of other options.

Wow. Who got to those guys?

The media is making a MAJOR attempt to reverse the narrative on CK, starting with the GQ endorsement. This is all about 2018.

Sounds like Schnatter is running to be the next NFL commish.

That is on the franchisee, not the chain. I inspected franchised hotels for a living and I can tell you that the legal process for dumping a franchisee is horrendous.

What a dumbass. He doesn’t sell a product that is distinctive in any way, so it will be easy for conservatives to boycott it. There are plenty of pizza joints who sell the same product.

< Go to your local indepedant pizza place. Better ingredients. Better pizza. >
Even down here in FL there are pizza joints run by transplants from NY/NJ who make damn good pizzas that come very close to that authentic "Noo Yawk" taste.
