It’s interesting. Just like the Brits don’t seem to have much trouble with their Hindu Indian population, but lots of trouble with Pakistani/Bangladesh folks, even though all three share pretty much the same culture, except for one Big Thing, so too Christian Arabs cause few problems in the world, but most other Arabs do. So maybe ‘Arabness’ isn’t the problem.
I’d say that Arabs, whether Christian, Muslim or Druse, have in common a weak sense of chronology due to linguistic causes. In Arabic, everything either already happened or hasn’t yet finished happening, and whatever’s in the past could have happened last week or 100 years ago. This makes Arabs susceptible to inflammatory rhetoric and the accompanying specious reasoning that helps fuel it. They also have famously volatile tempers, easily stirred up. But the difference with Muslim Arabs is that they have a belief system that justifies sudden violence, stirred by rhetoric and a combustible temper. Druse and Christians, while similarly built, do not have faiths that justifies violence, so they have developed more forbearance over the centuries.
That’s why the few inventions truly creditable to Islamic society are built around calming people down. The Turkish water pipe (hooka or nargilah) is one, made to be inhaled slowly and shared with others, and to encourage repose. Likewise, Turkish Coffee brews in the cup, and to drink it without getting a mouth full of grounds, you have to sip it slowly after letting it settle. The elders of Arabia, knowing their people, encourage them to calm down and talk over their mutual grievances, so contrived social smoking and coffee drinking as a means of cultivating this calm, so they can settle their differences without bloodshed.
The bit about the coffee and the water pipe is my own invention. The rest is based on Rafael Patai’s The Arab Mind, which is a worthwhile book, denounced by leftists as...get ready for it...racist (SUPRISE!).
