Conyers: Allow 'People Who are Incarcerated' to Vote
PJ Media ^ | November 21, 2017 | Nicholas Ballasy

Posted on 11/21/2017 4:04:18 PM PST by jazusamo

WASHINGTON – Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, said that all felons should have the right to vote.

“I’m for allowing people who are incarcerated to have the right to vote. Why not? They’re citizens. No matter what they’ve done, and I’m not defending any of their conduct, but all of it wasn’t bad – but all I’m saying is expanding the vote and eliminating structural barriers is critical,” Conyers said at this month’s annual Legislative & Policy Conference organized by Al Sharpton’s National Action Network (NAN) on Capitol Hill.

“It’s not an exaggeration to say that we’re in a battle for the soul of this nation. What we do is going to affect, not only us, but a lot of people around the world,” he added. “And every day in the courts and in Congress, issues are raised to determine what it means to be an American and what your rights are. Well, we want all of our rights, not some of them.”

Conyers, who made the comments before news broke of sexual harassment complaints and a settlement involving the lawmaker, said Congress should take action to eliminate “strict” voter identification laws at the state level and enact other reforms.

“Make Election Day a national holiday. We shouldn’t have to do this in between work or hope we can get off work or not get paid. We want a paid holiday for those who are working,” Conyers said. “We want to extend voting hours and increase early voting days.”

Conyers urged progressives to remain committed to “expanding the right to vote.”

“In the area of voting rights protections, the Justice Department has literally changed sides since the new administration has come in. They are throwing out some of the modest progress that was beginning to be made. And so we’ve got a lot to do. Voter suppression is now a policy objective of this administration,” he said.

“The myth that voter fraud is rampant and our elections infiltrated by undocumented immigrants continues to be used as a pretext for state legislatures across the country to make it harder for minorities to vote,” the congressman added. “The real objective is to achieve a cynical partisan political outcome. Researchers have found that the laws have a dramatic and discouraging effect on minority turnout.”

Last year, Conyers introduced the Voter Restoration Act that would “amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, by prohibiting states from disqualifying individuals convicted of criminal offenses from voting in federal and local elections, and from registering to vote, with the exception of those convicted of murder, manslaughter, or sex crimes.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) argued that Republicans are using the right to vote as a “tool of oppression.”

“Make no mistake, the right to vote is under attack. A right-wing Supreme Court guts voting rights. State legislators ram through voting suppression laws and a so-called election integrity commission wants the states to turn over voters’ birth dates and Social Security numbers – think about that. We will defend the right to vote,” Warren said at the conference.

“We will not add one penny of support and not one ounce of legitimacy to President Trump’s so-called election commission. We will not,” she added. “We will pass a new Voting Rights Advancement Act and we will demand legislation to protect every citizen’s right to vote.”

We know Conyers isn’t the only one... it’s time to find the other victims, out the scams used to pay them off or bully them, and get the word out about the rest of the abusers.

People have the right to vote for who they want - but they also have the right to know what creeps the MSM has been covering for all these years.

If Democrats had any sense of decency whatsoever, the DNC would remove Conyers from his powerful ranking committees, and pull all financial support and pending tax funding from Conyers (and Franken) .

Probably these radical Left, anti-American, Progressive Democrats intend to re-run the old Slick Willie Clinton defense of political sexual predators, and I quote:

"What a person does in his private life has no bearing on the performance of his job in public service."

REALITY CHECK: it's not private when it's on our tax dollar and the "personal business" is being conducted while they're doing the peoples work in the people's house on the people's dime.

=====================================

NOTE Fifty percent of American voters think Sen. Al Franken should resign over allegations of sexual misconduct against him, while 46 percent said he should be expelled from the Senate, according to a poll released on Wednesday. (hat tip The Politico/Morning Consult survey )

The 14th amendment was cleverly designed to try to force the Southern states to let black men vote, without also forcing Northern states to do so (some at that time still restricted voting rights to white males). The threat of reducing representation in Congress was meaningful when applied to Southern states where a sizable portion of the population was black, but at that time Northern states had black populations which were 1% or less of the total, so they would not be penalized.

In practice the threat of reducing representation was never carried out, and the 15th amendment in 1870 extended voting rights to black men in all the states. (The Republicans had realized that even though there were not very many black men in Northern states, their votes might make the difference in a close election--and they would all be voting Republican.)

The victims also have documents and non-disclosure agreements.

Public funds and a non-disclosure agreement do not work - at least not at the State or local level.

If public funds are involved, the details must be released, actually the settlement must be voted on in public.

Maybe Congress gets to play by a different set of rules.

Oops......I forget that.

Conyers is so obsessed with getting lubed, it’s doubtful he even has time to read (if he could).

Th latest is he had one tax-paid aide do nothing but keep lists of his sex partners.....and to fly hem in using tax dollars for a sexual romp.

Good point....Conyers probably has a tax-funded “Civil Rights Commemorative Committee” that he uses as a slush fund for sex
romps.

I want these CONGRESSIONAL creeps LIKE CONYERS to pay back the American taxpayers for the ‘hush money’ they paid out using OUR MONEY. AND I WANT THE ORDER TO PAY BACK THE MONEY TO COME FROM A JUDGE AT THE TIME OF SENTENCING.

How insulting AND CRIMINAL does it have to get before people wake up to the truth - the man committed a crime.

Congressmen abuse women then pay them off with MONEY THEY STEAL FROM TAXPAYERS? And what? We're suppose to accept an 'apology' written by a professional speechwriter? It doesn't work that way in flyover... if we steal we're arrested. Congresmen have committed a crime. The system is: arrest and trial in front of fellow citizens. IT'S NOT TO CRAFT AN APOLOGY. THEY STOLE MONEY - - THAT'S A CRIME.

DEAL WITH IT AS A CRIME.

If CONGRESSIONAL ELITES HAVE committed CRIMES they should be arrested and tried by a jury. I don't care if the women ‘forgive’ a rapist after receiving large sums of hush money - if it's a CRIME it should be treated as a crime. Even include the ‘presumption of innocence’ which is part of our system....

When Bill Clinton raped a woman it was NEVER UP TO HILLARY TO ‘FORGIVE’ HIM. It was never up to Bill Clinton to ‘forgive’ Hillary for making a hundred thousand in the markets in six months either. That was a crime too and should have been treated as a crime.

I don't care if his party pushes him out... I trust the people to elect their own Representative IF THEY ARE GIVEN ALL THE FACTS AND NOT THE WHITE WASHED LIES THE CORRUPT PRESS PUTS OUT THAT PROTECTS DEMOCRATS AND SQUASES REPUBLICANS.

PUT IT ALL OUT AND LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE.

OH, AND IF THE CREEP USED TAXPAYER MONEY TO PAY OFF WOMEN HE ABUSED ARREST HIM FOR THEFT. THE JERK IS NOT ABOVE THE LAW.

I don't even care if Conyers's wife ‘forgives’ him for robbing a bank if he robbed a banks too... or if the ‘bigs’ in Congress ‘forgive’ him for stealing from citizens. They ARE NOT ALLOWED TO 'FORGIVE' CRIMES AGAINST CITIZENS.

APOLOGIES ARE NOT PART OF OUR CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. I DON'T CARE IF A BANK ROBBER 'APOLOGIZES' OR NOT... I DON'T CARE IF HIS WIFE 'FORGIVES' HIM. WHAT KIND OF APOLOGY WOULD WE ACCEPT FROM A MAN WHO MURDERED HIS WIFE? EVEN IF HE HAD THE APOLOGY FOCUS GROUP TESTED AND WRITTEN BY A FIRST CLASS SPEECH WRITER?

He broke the law - arrest him and let a jury decide. That's how our system works. Congress does NOT have the Constitutional right to 'forgive' or offer pardons. Slap up the corrupt FBI and tell them ELITES ARE NOT ABOVE THE LAW.

Well put but the WKRP ‘turkey fleet’ will fly first...even the frozen ones...before ANYTHING substantial will happen.’ (Lord I will take the insults etal if proven wrong - in fact I would welcome them)

Realizing this ‘Congressional’ thing has been going on ‘forever’, I really thought the whole system would get overhauled when the ‘House Banking Scheme’ hit the light of day because EVERY ‘Joe Six Pack & Mate’ know what happens when you start bouncing checks all over the place or even try writing (’kiting’) them prior a deposit.

These clowns were ‘allowed’ to walk down the the Post Office, buy a roll of stamps, pay for it with a ‘donated’ check and walk away with the change in CASH.

We slapped a few wrists rather timidly and the ‘poor SOBs’ rather than be facing the same Jail Time J6P etal would be facing were basically allowed to dream up another scheme....

I remember ‘back in the day’ when a person would retire from the Military, have a ceremony on Friday evening and Monday come in wearing a Suit and ‘working’ for the civilian part of the operation.

Guess ‘we were too ‘stupid’ to realize the new job was either payback for services past rendered or hiring his expertise to get around the red tape.

However, when these guys were found out a 5 or so year ban was put on.

Also remember when we used to ‘laugh’ at people who retired from a Government (NON social security) job then ‘working’ at the local hardware store to make enough money to qualify for the SS money that others had been paying into ALL their working career.

‘They’ fixed that by expanding unemployment insurance then allowing people to complain they were ‘depressed and in constant turmoil’ from drawing from the dole, they were allowed to claim such ‘illnesses’ and draw Social Security.

I have absolutely nothing against LEGITIMATE helping of those in need but we have backed ourselves into a corner by all these ‘giveaways’.

Watch these ‘Judge’ shows - Judge Judy tries to berate the ‘cheats’ but people actually go on there and admit they are drawing (at 30) SS benefits for a bad back and in the interim have managed to spit out a few kids.
She used to really get on them but has eased up a little, one of her favorites being -NO, YOU don’t take care of your kids-You are getting food stamps, ADD payments, welfare etc and BYRD & I and the rest of the working people are paying for it.....
Have never heard one of them ‘Thank her or us’ but todays type has the ‘it is owed to me mentality - doesn’t matter what Race, Color or Creed, it seems to be a prevailing attitude.
People ‘used’ to take Public or even ‘Church’ money with a little shame but today it seems to be a ‘badge of honor’.

I pick up on the attitude when a ‘well dressed’ man will sit there, talk about his drawing (whatever) then making a statement like ...I work 24 hrs a week but I CAN’T work any longer than that as I will lose my benefits.
‘BENEFITS’ maybe it is time to reintroduce the words mooch and leech into everyday language and quit catering to the phonies...

Admittedly there probably is such a thing as ADD or whatever they label it BUT once Unca Sugah starts paying YOU if YOUR kid is said to have ADD, pretty soon EVERYONE wants a piece of that action.

Even from a moral stand point WHY should people be receiving PUBLIC MONEY because they are ‘taking care’ of their own kinfolk?

But once a program is introduced, it is nigh near impossible to discontinue...

“Not at all.”

Well, I was being polite. What you posted, that got deleted because I reported it, was overtly racist.

There is a reason it got deleted.

You need to learn from your mistake rather than defending your comments.

There is a huge difference between stating statistical facts that some might dislike but are true, and advocating a racist ideology.

“To the extent that any individual subscribes to the tenets of Conservatism, welcome aboard!”

Do you realize there are conservative blacks on this forum who have been here years longer than you?

How “welcome” do you think they feel when a member of this forum actually advocates for taking away the right for black people to vote?

“And there is no question but that a goodly number of Blacks have achieved success, but they have characteristically NOT USED THEIR GOOD FORTUNE TO HELP THE LESS FORTUNATE MEMBERS OF THEIR ETHNIC GROUP.”

Why should THEY, that is the successful blacks, do any more for black people than successful white people should?

My father did. He was never very successful financially, but he was a great man. He spent a lot of time on this forum in his later years. When he was young, he went into all-black housing projects and taught Bible studies for kids and teenagers. He took them to church and Christian camps. He brought them over to our home to eat meals with us. When he needed to hire some help with work at the house, he would look for opportunities to hire these black teenagers.

These things alone did not transform our society, but he did his part to help. Some of the kids he worked with did become successful in school and work, and came back and thanked him for his help.

Conservatism recognizes that the government is woefully inefficient at “helping” people. Charity is a function of faith. All religions that have any validity, have charitable activities.

“My daughter dates a man who is mixed race, and he looks African.”

I’m not sure if you’re sharing this to give some sort of support to the idea that you are not a racist, or some other reason. I hope, for your and your daughter’s sake that he is a good man.

You stated that he experiences some negative treatment due to race, and he understands this. I wonder how hurt he would feel, and how hurt your daughter would feel, if they realized you were advocating that blacks should not have the right to vote.

I think you should face the reality that you were wrong to state such a horrible thing, and you should post an apology to the conservative blacks on this forum. And you should thank them for going against the grain of society and often, their own families, in order to support what is right.

We do need a voting system that reduces the tendency for people to vote themselves freebies from the Treasury.

But it is a waste of time to put forward ideas that are not going to ever happen.

Maybe it is useful to discuss how conservatives will rebuild society after Civil War 2.

But for now, what we should focus on is stopping potential voter fraud and the importation of liberal voters.

With real conservatives governing, the practical details can be worked out. Without that, the nation will be lost.

I agree with almost everything you said - you're a realist. But this was my favorite part - even if somewhat unrealistic in our present time... as you say.

While the President may not be a “True Conservative” to some, and he’s never said he was anyway, since he’s been in office, lots and lots of people are being exposed for who they really are. I’ll go out on a limb and say that you and I, both, would love to know the truth about Roy Moore, but:

1. there’s really no way he can deny any of it, other than to say it didn’t happen and take his word for it.
2. the narratives that have been put out, so far, have been falling apart, thankfully

But, if he wins, and I hope he does, his ordeal will empower others to step up to the plate and make some of the career politicians follow along with Corker, Flake and the others that are sure to follow. Toss in the info about the sexual harassment stuff and I think the time is right, to usher in some new blood that can promote and pass Conservative ideas and get things worked out.

Other than that, with the mass, unbridled immigration of 3rd world savages - ANTIFA - BLM, this place has the chance to get real ugly in the future.

I laughed so hard the first time I saw that episode that I was crying. You make good points... there are lots of horrible things going on - and our work is cut out for us...

Our country's worth fighting for - if we can keep the House and Senate and Presidency and Supreme Court - and watch these folks like hawks - - we might be able to make the changes...

See, even you BNGs/newbies get it right now and then. HA HA

PDT better whip this group into shape and if he doesn’t they may as well be replaced by the Libs...at least then PDT doesn’t whizz off R’s by going against ‘their’ reps.

If Ls/Ds have control of both sides of aisle PDT can pull a BO and point out his pen etc and start EOs...HOWEVER the Ls/Ds will not Casper Milquetoast and lay down for PDT, they will fight him, tooth and nail. (Do have to ‘admire’ them for that, they do stick together)

No different than any other ‘battle’, you expect the enemy or people on the ‘other’ side of the line to not like you BUT when people on YOUR side of the line are as much-if not more -vociferous and anti-you then it is time to take drastic actions...CALL in an Air Strike on the entire position - even if it wipes you out, you are getting both the enemy and traitors out of the way.
