Conyers stepping aside as ranking Dem on House Judiciary Committee
The Hill ^ | November 26, 2017 | Rebecca Savransky & Olivia Beavers

Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) announced he is stepping aside as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee pending an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment.

“After careful consideration and in light of the attention drawn by recent allegations made against me, I have notified the Democratic Leader of my request to step aside as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee during the investigation of these matters," he said in a statement on Sunday.

“I deny these allegations, many of which were raised by documents reportedly paid for by a partisan alt-right blogger. I very much look forward to vindicating myself and my family before the House Committee on Ethics," he added.

Conyers's attorney last week maintained that the lawmaker would not resign from the post as the House Ethics Committee investigates into the allegations.

The Ethics Committee opened an investigation into Conyers after BuzzFeed News reported last week that Conyers settled a wrongful dismissal complaint in 2015 with a former employee who alleged she was fired because she would not "succumb to [his] sexual advances."

Other staffers alleged that he made requests for sexual favors, inappropriately touched staffers and used congressional resources to transport women that they believed he was having sexual relationships with at the time.

Shortly the report was published, another woman came forward with allegations that the lawmaker harassed and verbally abused her while she worked for him in the 1990s.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in statement about Conyers's decision to step aside stressed that “zero tolerance means consequences.”

“We must ensure the Congress has a climate of dignity and respect with zero tolerance,” she added.

During an appearance earlier Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," Pelosi called Conyers an "icon" who deserves "due process."

Conyers, the longest-serving member of the House, has said he will "fully cooperate" with the Ethics Committee's investigation.

His announcement came after several Democratic lawmakers called for him to step down from his powerful post.

One of his House colleagues, Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.) on Friday, also called for the Michigan lawmaker to resign amid the allegations.

"I deny these allegations, many of which were raised by documents reportedly paid for by a partisan alt-right blogger.

The only valid question is whether or not the documents are real, not who paid to have them released.

what Conyers said after his wife was sentenced:

said a Conyers spokesman. "Public officials must expect to be held to the highest ethical and legal standards.

Now, if I'm Conyers, I start acting like Crazy Vinnie the Chin Gigante, or get someone to start the dementia rumors. Start being run around in a wheel chair.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Conyers would do that.

The top down list of RATs is:

Nadler
Lofgren
Jackson-Lee (Ms. “If I only had a brain”)
Cohen
Hank Johnson Jr. ( Mr. Guam is tipping over)
Ted Deutch
Gutierrez
and nine more miscreants

There’s plenty of incriminating dirt......all we have to do is get the books of the Congressional Black Caucus audited.

I sincerely believe that’s why Conyers stepped down from the judiciary committee.....he was being hounded by the guys in the C/B/C.

They dont want to be under a mciroscope.

Meaning he’s not resigning from congress. He will nevertheless go far in the dem party, seeing as how he has protective pigmentation and certified victim status.

“Yep, I imagine it does.”

He’s going to be more fun to watch than Conyers was. Whenever I see him I am reminded of that “fat green thing” that’s in the Mucenex commercials.

Letting accusations be sufficient grounds for dismissal from office is not a game we can win. Don’t forget what they tried to do to Trump just before the election. They could decide to play those cards again.

Why step down? Because NO business may be concluded while this controversy is swirling all about Conyers. But he is still a reliable vote for obstruction, if in no longer so great a measure.

Shield, deflect, shelter in place. Were he to be forced out of Congress, and for sure there is no way to shame Conyers into resigning, then the political machine in his home district will have to dig up ANOTHER reliable vote, and build up his (or her) seniority over many more years.

Who knows, this all blows over, and Conyers gets reinstated with even GREATER seniority.

Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-Va.) is the lead sponsor of legislation slated for a vote this week that would streamline the Congressional sexual harassment complaint process, amid growing accusations and revelations about members of Congress that are similar to those involving powerful men from Hollywood, the media and Silicon Valley.

The legislation also would require mandatory training on harassment and discrimination for all lawmakers, staff and interns who work in Congress. “There needs to be one standard for members,” Comstock said on “This Week,” noting that Conyers benefited from making a settlement payment that was never revealed until a BuzzFeed report last week. “No more secret payments.”

Conyers used his office budget to silence his accusers....monies taxpayers supply congressmen for salaries and office costs.

Another tax subsidized Office of Compliance recorded about $15 million tax dollars to secretly settle sex harassment claims.

Comstock and even Democrats are calling for Conyers to quit Congress.

Yes she did. She is guilty by association. She has assaulted us all with her political philosophy and her face.

Stepping down? He and others like him should be removed from office and their pensions docked accordingly. This is no punishment for Conyers and this remark by Pelosi is totally vacuous..."House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in statement about Conyers's decision to step aside stressed that “zero tolerance means consequences.”

“We must ensure the Congress has a climate of dignity and respect with zero tolerance,” she added.

We American citizens are to blame for electing these fatuous people to represent us....it is time to really push for term limits. If you can't verify your elected have done anything other than to vote yea or nay on important issues they promised they would do something on...immigration, abortion, security etc.....if they haven't voted according to their promises or what they stand for....don't vote them back into office.....it is this old guard that keep the younger, hopefully intelligent newcomers voted into office from doing something other than voting as they are told...imho...too much time is spent on Social Engineering like gays in the military, protesters, NFL, etc.

A real education starting from First grade with America first, our history and our successes as well as our failures.
