I stumbled onto FR in late 2005 and thought it a great site, it’s been the only site for me since then.

I remember getting a phone call from Jim Robinson at around this time in 1997. We were then posting together on the Prodigy Whitewater BB back in the early days of the Internet. We used to post newspaper and magazine articles in their entirety. But Prodigy (owned by Sears) began pulling down posts that were copyrighted news articles. Free Republic was to be a "fair use" website where we could post articles in their entirety.

Most of us know the rest of the story. Eventually Free Republic had to obey the copyrights and only excerpt articles where the original sources had an issue with it. Still, we are able to post many articles in it's entirety here. And as for those that we have to excerpt, we Freepers have become famous for "not reading the article" and posting replies based on the headline or excerpt only!

I signed up for Free Republic on the very first day under my actual real life name. A bit later, I decided to change my name to SamAdams76 and so that is why my sign up date is Dec 9 1997 and not the very day Free Republic went online.

Good point. Monthly pay / a dollar a day, that's like way cheap for what this is all about.

Years ago, my Dad commented to my wife how well informed I seemed to be on almost everything political and pretty much everything else. A big part of that is freerepublic.com

You're right humblegunner, we get you. And no I'm not pimping my blog.

Happy Anniversary, Jim! Thank you for creating this site. I agree that the best thing about FR is the “thought aggregation” from all these wonderful people. Long live conservative diversity, lol!

Personally, I can’t really remember how I first came upon FR. Either Drudge or else the Townhall chat board.

I’ve had some great discussions and arguments here and admired so many great writers. And matured a lot over my long time here.

I’ve been quoted verbatim by Rush, thanked personally by Sean, and one FReeper believed I WAS Rush Limbaugh which was a ton of fun. Though I needed help to get some golf and football references to pepper into my comments during that phase. ;) The guy so wanted “me” to say a particular phrase on air to prove to his wife that I was Rush.

We’ve gone through some of our nation’s worst times together and had our hearts broken together. We’ve loved and lost a lot together here. We’ve had our triumphs, too.

But mostly, I’m just here for the jokes.

I signed up in 1998 because I could go back and look up stories that had long disappeared from the newspaper. I was very active in commenting on my local newspaper. Whenever they banned comments (which they often did before elections to block liberals being exposed) I would be more active here! The newspaper banned comments completely a while ago.

I really began to appreciate all the different points of view.

Congratulations Jim! That took some serious vision back then and I am amazed at how much I have benefitted from FR. You have had a huge impact on society, history and politics. Plus it is a forum for sharing not only from those topics but gardening, cooking, trivia, and prayer requests. And that last one is very important. Here’s to many more years!

If it weren’t for pictures, I wouldn’t be able to order. That’s why Olive Garden is my favorite restaurant. :)
