He might be the smartest person here.
He could take a broken/damaged/p.o.s./junk firearm and simply SAY it was a “prized $1000 rifle” to the wide-eyed idiot journalist.
He could even say it was his ONLY firearm if he really wants to throw gungrabbers off the scent.

There is no proof this was even a functional AR in the video.
He might have seen an opportunity to fool gullible media for reasons only he knows.
