Don't blame the Donald for those losses; blame the candidates

It was a bad week for establishment Republicans from New Jersey running for governor.

And I'm not talking about just Kim Guadagno. Ed Gillespie managed to lose a big race as well.

Both were New Jerseyans: Gillespie by birth, Guadagno by marriage.

Let us dispense first with Guadagno, who was born in Iowa and came here after completing law school.

From the beginning of this campaign it was obvious that her chances of getting elected governor rested with Chris Christie.

-snip-

Or in other words, it is run the same way the national party is run: by people like Ed Gillespie.

The 56-year-old Gillespie grew up in Burlington County before heading down I-95 to attend Catholic University in Washington D.C. There he began a career as a consummate political hack. Before long he was a partner in a lobbying firm called Quinn Gillespie & Associates that, among other accomplishments, raked in $27 million from the not-too-big-to-fail Enron Corp.

That got him named Republican National Chairman during the Bush 43 administration. At the time I had the pleasure of watching him debate at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

The pleasure came in watching the late Phyllis Schlafly, as tough-minded a conservative as ever drew breath, debate Gillespie on immigration.

Gillespie was advancing the Bush line on immigration, which amounted to an argument that we need cheap labor. After he repeated that cliche about "Who will pick our fruits and vegetables?" Schlafly pointed out that on the many family farms in her native Missouri, the farmers do the picking.

By the time Schlafly was done dissecting him, Gillespie looked as if he had donated his brain to science and had arranged for early delivery.

I’m okay with not blaming Donald Trump for losses as long as we don’t praise him for others’ successes.

Were there new elections in NJ and Va or is this old news?

Come on guys, that was the past.
NJ had Christy stinking up the ticket and Enron Ed G is an Establishment loser, President Trump was not what either state was voting about.
