Watchdog: Trump Offers Substantial Amount of Alaskan Reserve to Oil Companies

The Trump administration is offering oil companies all 10.3 million acres of available land on the reserve, the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) said in a press release on Tuesday. The reserve is the single-largest parcel of public land in the United States.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The Trump administration has opened up a huge amount of land in Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve for oil-sale leases, the CBD said.

“Oil companies submitted lease bids on Monday for the largest oil-lease sale ever offered in Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve,” the release said. “Bids will be open on Wednesday.”

Trump just opened off nearly 10.3 million acres of unspoiled land in Alaska's National Petroleum Reserve to oil and mining interests and they'll be placing their bids tomorrow.

Trump has been a big supporter for US energy independence and has rolled back Obama-era regulations that placed federal protections on public lands.

In October, US Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke announced the largest fossil fuel lease offering in the history of the United States. The US federal government opened up 76.9 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico, which is scheduled to be auctioned off in March 2018, the release added.

“I remember reading about the US Naval Oil Reserve.

No. The US Naval Oil Reserve, also known as the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, was in Elk Hills, California. It was the subject of what was one of the largest corruption scandals in US history - the Teapot Dome Scandal of the 1920’s. Warren Hardings’s Interior Secretary allowed oil companies to pump oil at low rates, in exchange for bribes.

Al Gore, during the Clinton Administration however, put that corruption to shame, when he sold the whole damn thing at fire sale prices to his families long time sponsor, Occidental Petroleum, in what was the largest privatization of Federal property in the history of the United States.

Not a peep about that. Al Gore flies between his mansions on a private jet nowadays.

The oil leases in this article are for deposits that are on federal land/waters, but have not been open to development under Obama Administration policies. When they are put into production, there will be local oil booms with lots of good paying jobs, tax revenues and royalties will pour into Government coffers, and some basic industries like steel and transportation will get a boost as well.

I guess I thought the Naval Reserve was in Alaska.
It’s amazing that there is so much corrective information on FR.

Thanks !

The Naval Petroleum Reserve was actually a few different sites - Elk Hills (Teapot Dome) was the largest.

The program was shut down under the Clinton Administration, and the assets were sold off (Corruptly, in my opinion), transferred to the Bureau of Land Management, and one deposit was given to the Ute Tribe in Utah (I would not be surprised if there was some way that Democrats monetized all those transfers to their benefit somehow).

Instead of the Old Naval Petroleum Reserve sites, the USA still maintains Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) sites under the Department of Energy. The SPR sites are underground caverns along the Gulf Coast, that they pump oil in and out of, depending on price and need.

SPR has a capacity of about 700 million barrels. As a nation, we import a net of about 5 million barrels per day (import 10, export 5), most of which comes from Canada (3), Saudi Arabia (1), and Venezuela/Mexico (1). The military, uses under a 400,000 barrels per day.

US production has been on an historic rise the last six or seven years (a lot due to new Shale oil production techniques), and is approaching 10 million barrels per day. We are now three years into exporting again, after banning exports due to the Arab oil embargo of 1973. American oil entering the world market is weakening OPEC’s ability to control oil prices, and helping to support global growth through lower energy prices.

In addition to the rapid growth in US oil, we have had a similar surge in US natural gas production, which we have now built the infrastructure to export as well. US energy dependence is rapidly becoming independence - and President Trump has proposed bringing about an era of American energy dominance.

These new leases open the door to additional historically significant production increases in the coming years, if market prices make it profitable to do so. They very realistically support a path to the US energy dominance that President Trump has proposed.

We also have the Navel Reserves in Alaska but this was not part of the Teapot Dome scandal.

“...Navel Reserves...”

Are they ‘innie’ or ‘outie’ reserves?
