~ The FReeper Canteen Presents ~

~ Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 ~

On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.) In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu, he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets. At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 "Val" dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor. Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack.

Plate Lunch was always good...some kind of meat, two scoops of rice, and mac salad.

Yuck! Snow! I hope it ends up missing you.

They’re saying we could get a bit of it here Saturday. grrr! It’s only a 20% chance so maybe we’ll get lucky and get none.

It was a good day. Always a good one when I get to spend time helping out at the museum.

How are things down your way besides incoming snow?

Glad the week’s gone well so far. Bummer it’s going to be another long one though. Will you still have some time to get your Christmas tree this weekend?

She’ll still be with y’all in your memories.
Still not the same as being able to call her up and chat.
Prayers for all of you in your time of loss.

My Dad was a WW2 Vet (Pacific) and I grew up with his stories.

He was the Ship’s photographer, and i grew up with his pictures to go with the stories.

I have been very blessed.

I’m glad you got to go help out at the museum! What was your main task today?

We have gotten a bit over 3/10ths of an inch of very slow rain today. Great for the yard and plants!

Dulcie has not woken up today. She has begun to have gurgling in her throat, but is still lucid enough to clear her throat to remove it. She hasn’t eaten since Monday. We are keeping her comfortable with the morphine and Lorazepam.

I hoped you’d gotten a little more rain than that based on the radar. But gentle soaking rain is always good. There’s still more on the radar so maybe you’ll end up with a nice total when it ends.

We were thrilled to get 1.5 inch yesterday and it was a soaker. That was three times what we got the entire month of Nov.

Looks like any snow this weekend will stay north of us. Whew! But it’s still going to be cold enough we won’t want to go outside if we don’t have to. Highs in the 30s with wind.

My task today was what it was last week and will be for a while ..... cleaning uniforms. Just brushing them off real good with a lint brush. We’re supposed to get a bunch of garment bags from a dry cleaners to cover them with but they weren’t there today.

Sorry to hear Dulcie is going downhill so fast. But at the same time fast is better than lingering. For her sake any way. I know y’all aren’t in any hurry to say goodbye.
Prayers continue.

Well, it’s still coming down, and even if it changes over to snow/sleet, it’s still wet. LOL! 1 1/2 inches sounds wonderful...but people here would be crying “flood!”

I’ll bet some of those uniforms haven’t been cleaned since they left the person who originally wore them. LOL!

To tell the truth, I was afraid to go in to check on her this morning, but she was ok. Not responsive to voices but reacts to pain. Especially when the 2 ladies were bathing her and were not very gentle. I felt so bad!!
