FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Reuters) - A man who vandalized a Florida mosque in January 2016 and left a raw slab of bacon on its doorstep was sentenced to 15 years in prison on a hate crime conviction, a state attorney’s spokesman said on Wednesday.

Wolfe was also sentenced to 15 years of probation, to be served after his prison sentence, Brown said.

Fifteen years in prison for simple vandalism? The courts are out of control and off the rails.

The Governor of Florida should intervene in this travesty and pardon the guy. That sentence is outrageous.

Gov. Rick Scott should pardon this guy.
What a travesty of justice.

If a Mooslim had done this to a Jewish Synagogue or a Christian Church, he would have gotten 6 months probation.

I hope the man sentenced has the wherewithal to appeal this case or that one of America’s legal aid groups steps in. This is a terrible precedent.

The bacon thing...

I’m no fan of islam, and even less of a fan of the very concept of hate crimes, but this was a really stupid thing to do without hiding your identity. Seriously.

And everybody knows that arguing that throwing a slab of bacon on the front steps of a mosque is no big deal because, after all, it’s just a bunch of garbage, is like saying burning the american flag is no big deal because, after all, it’s just a piece of cloth.

His message was obvious, and I would personally love to see islam outlawed in the US, but everybody knows the message he was sending.

So he definitely should have gotten six months!, and add five years for stupidity. But 15 is ludicrous.

It does send the message that if you’re going to commit a hate crime, may as well go a lot further that sticking tasty and harmless bacon to a door handle.

That’s no crime. More of a misdemeanor. But now the prosecutors here have created blasphemy law in Florida, which is unconstitutional.

I think it is viewed as a threat, kinda like the KKK burning a cross on your lawn.

And again, to be clear, I’m speaking academically. I want islam banned.

15 years is longer than Dan White received for killing the mayor of San Francisco and that gay icon. Wolfe should have claimed he had eaten Twinkies before his act of vandalism.

What would his sentence have been if he had vandalized a church or synagogue?

It may very well be that the judge went overkill on the sentencing in order to get the Gov to act and reduce the sentence so they can then hammer the governor for being soft on discrimination, etc.

The guy should definitely have to pay for the damages and serve time but his sentence should not exceed that typically meted out for any other sort of vandalism against private property. Pretty sure 15 yrs exceeds the norm...

I think this thread begs the question, do they serve bacon in prison?

That was my question. Probably get a hand slap in public and an “attaboy” behind closed doors.

Talk about insanity, Washington State is about to allow birth certificates to list a third sex as X.

I don’t see any valid comparison there.

Not to mention the left-wing origins of the KKK, Woodrow Wilson’s favorites.

Is that wishful thinking or would he have a good chance of the conviction being vacated? On what grounds?
