Former Maricopa County, Ariz. Sheriff Joe Arpaio told The Daily Beast Thursday that he is “seriously, seriously, seriously considering running for the U.S. Senate” to replace the retiring Jeff Flake.

The Daily Beast reached out to Arpaio shortly after Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., announced his resignation over discussions with two female staffers about whether they would consider being a surrogate mother. […]

Should Arpaio enter the race, he would be joining a crowded Republican primary field that includes Rep. Martha McSally and former state senator Kelli Ward. Ward, who was leading Flake by 26 points in one poll taken before the incumbent chose not to run, is backed by former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon. …

This would be a disaster! Dr. Kelli Ward has the election locked up, Arpaio would split the ticket. What the hell is he thinking?

I really don't think he's electable in a statewide election, in what will probably be a Democratic year, in a state with a large Latino population, as a non-incumbent.

I like Arpaio, but he lost reelection in November 2016 as a longtime incumbent. He has a lot of baggage with that conviction for which Trump pardoned him too.

How would he split the ticket? He’d be running in the primary.

How can you “split the ticket” in a primary?

Arpaio would turn 87 in 2019 (first year of this Senate term). This is plain silly.

I am a big fan of the Sheriff. That being said, he is just too old to be running for a six year term. He is 85 years old now. He should work to elect a younger Republican Conservative who can hold the seat for a few terms.

His mistake was not grooming a viable successor and retiring at the age of 80 in 2012.

Too old. Every time I saw him at Trump’s side during campaign he seemed and acted incredibly old. Besides, he is stilll caught up in legal problems.

I agree....but for a moment, let’s just dream about Joe and Roy teaming up against McConnell....what a great thing that would be! wish it could be so, but Joe is too old....

No, Mr. Arpaio. Too old to begin something like that, not when we are slamming the Dems for their own Jurassic tendencies with Pelosi, Feinstein and others who don’t ever plan to leave office. I’m sure it must be very difficult to leave the status of being an elected official and go back to just being another citizen. Be glad you didn’t get “Clintoned” by Valerie Jarret along the way.

Let Sheriff Joe run. If he wins the primary then it was meant to be. If not then he can say he tried.

Dr. Ward has an extensive network in place since she ran against McCain. She’s primed to be a strong candidate. What purpose would it serve to have Arpaio challenge her and divide Republican loyalties at this point. I don’t think that all who work for the losing candidate are inspired to get to the polls.

And if he won the primary I don’t think he’d take it in the general. Either way, why toss a wrench in the works at this point when we have a solid candidate in Dr. Ward.
