Alabama GOP Senator: I Hope a 'Write-In Republican Wins' Special Election

Alabama Republican Sen. Richard Shelby says he wants a Republican to win the state’s special election Tuesday, but did not vote for GOP candidate Roy Moore and hopes a write-in candidate will be victorious.

Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Jake Tapper, Sen. Shelby reemphasized his absentee vote was not for Roy Moore. In November, Sen. Shelby announced he did not vote for Roy Moore, but did not say his write-in candidate of choice.

"I'd rather see the Republican win, but I'd rather see a Republican write-in. I couldn't vote for Roy Moore. I didn't vote for Roy Moore," Shelby said. “I wrote in a distinguished Republican name.

He also added that he has no reason not to believe that egregious allegations of sexual misconduct against Moore dating 40 years ago. Moore has been dogged by numerous women who have accused him of either dating or sexually assaulting them as teenagers when he was in his thirties. When “there’s a lot of smoke, there’s got to be some fire somewhere," the Senator said.

"I understand stand where the (president’s support) is coming from but…(W)e call it a tipping point," Shelby said. "I think, so many accusations, so many cuts, so many drip, drip, drip -- when it got to the 14-year-old's story, that was enough for me. I said I can't vote for Roy Moore."

On Friday, President Donald J. Trump reiterated his support for Roy Moore.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump LAST thing the Make America Great Again Agenda needs is a Liberal Democrat in Senate where we have so little margin for victory already. The Pelosi/Schumer Puppet Jones would vote against us 100% of the time. He’s bad on Crime, Life, Border, Vets, Guns & Military. VOTE ROY MOORE!

Polls currently show the special election is neck-and-neck between Moore and his Democrat opponent Doug Jones.

Richard Shelby is 83. He’s been in the Senate for 31 years ( since 1987). Come on Alabama voters, vote Roy Moore in and pray that this old bastard dies in office. He’s there now until 2022, when he will be 88!

So shelby thinks that if someone gets accused of dating someone 40 years ago it is the same as a conviction? What pussy.

What a doofus. No ‘write-in’ Republican will win. Enough write-ins on the Repub side and it will be a win for Jones.

These anti-Moore (thus anti-MAGA) guys are infuriating.

I wish some crazy liberal women would come to understand they can get more money by accusing a republican and start falsely accusing people like Shelby. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Right, Senator?

The radio station airplay against Moore in Alabama is constant and brutal. The RINO’s and Democrats are pulling out all of the stops and infusing millions in this effort.

Shelby is senile!

...when it got to the 14-year-old's story, that was enough for me.

Idiot, if the MSM and enough friends of Gloria Allred say that you are the illegitimate love child of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bella Abzug, does that make it true?

What dirt does the the Clinton Machine or Congressional Sexcapade Slush Fund have on you to cause you to issue such a statement just before the election. You must REALLY want a Democrat in that seat and in control of the Senate.

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) today released the following statement regarding the passing of Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy: "Ted Kennedy treated his colleagues with grace and respect, regardless of whether we agreed with him on the issues. His presence and his example of comity and courage will be missed in the Senate.

Shelby will be toast next election. How much are you now worth Richard, since you’ve been in Washington for all these many years?

If nothing else, because of President Trump and everything that has followed since his inauguration, we’re getting an education on how those that we elect, think of us. They’re exposing themselves for the frauds they are. It’ll be a great day when guy like Shelby, Cochran, Thune, Cornyn, Sasse, Rubio, Graham, etc, can be shown the door.
