FBI: Sessions Did Not Need to Disclose Foreign Contacts on Security Clearance Form

Attorney General Jeff Sessions was not required to disclose foreign contacts on his security clearance application unless he "developed personal relationships" with them, the FBI told one of his assistants last March in an email, according to a report on CNN..

The email, released by the FBI through a Freedom of Information Act request to a group called Right Wing Watch, said Sessions did the right thing in omitting names on the form where it asked if he had had contact with foreign governments in the previous seven years, including embassy officials.

"For the purposes of the SF-86, he was not required to list foreign government contacts while on official government business unless he developed personal relationships from such contacts," the FBI official said in the email sent to Sessions aide Peggi Hanrahan.

Sessions, who was confirmed as AG in early February, only disclosed a meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak after the Senate hearings.

Sessions has been questioned by the Senate and House regarding what he knew about the Trump campaign's interactions with Russians and has repeatedly denied having any communications with Russians or knowledge of any campaign contact with Russians.

If he knew in advance that not disclosing contacts was legal then Jeff would have had to find another way to not get involved.

That’s mighty white of the FBI to explain what the AG must and must not do. It’s like they don’t realize they only serve a mere clerical and informational function, but the President can ultimately clear who he deems worthy.

They need a royal bit@h slap.

Seems like Jeff doesn’t have to do much of anything. What a putznugget Sessions has turned out to be. Boo Jeff Sessions taking a knee during the big game - the Colin Kappernick of Attorney Generals. 43 years receiving a pay check from the government - Joe Biden jealous

Nice to know that the FBI is thoroughly investigating Sessions and NOT Hillary.

Seems he was told he didn’t need to recuse yet still did and then hired (basically) a Democrat as his Deputy AG to lead the Russia investigation which was immediately assigned a special prosecutor just two weeks after Rosenstein got sworn in. Sounds like someone was blackmailed.

Told by AG office in March that it’s not illegal.
Yet in April he recuses.
Surprises everyone by naming a non Republican non Trump backer, a US Attorney under Obama admin for last 8 years, from 100% Democrat Baltimore no less, as the the guy who will lead the Russia investigation.
Rosenstein advises Trump to fire his old Uranium One partner Comey after just a week on the job.
Three days later Rosenstein hires his old boss Mueller as Special Prosecutor.

The Fix was in and Jeff is either a dummy or he was in on it.

Sessions was attacked by a month old kitten in 1960, he’s never been the same since.

He cowers at the first sign of meowing and trembles at the mere thought of a kitten.

the fbi is required to clear fake AG sessions, otherwise fake AG sessions would have to resign and trump could then hire a real AG.

Bears repeating. This is so dementedly treasonous it's disgusting. Previous poster noted Sessions 43 years on the government tit. The U.S. senate is a cesspool. Why have so many Democrats been chosen for positions of authority in the Trump administration? Why was there NOT a purge of Obama holdovers immediately after the inauguration, as has happened with almost every incoming new president? Unanswered questions because unasked questions because the whole thing stinks. From the very top. There's nowhere else to go for all of this. Then his DACA "compassion" and throwing the Obama bullshit decree right over to congress to turn into amnesty instead of chopping its head completely off. Just who the hell is DJT? Are we dealing with a schizoid?

So okay, then who or what is holding DJT's decision-making ability hostage? Has his family been threatened?

it is my vague impession that that the deep state congress critters are prone to impeachment hearings if trump fires sessions... (this might get corrected by someone as i am only following it from a distance...)

“it is my vague impession...”

Distant or not, yours is a valid impression.

The Never-Jeff crowd here can be quite silly at times. Blaming him for everything under the sun and acting as if he is somehow a deep state Dem or some such nonsense.

Sessions has been fabulous on what Trump said was his top priority for him: illegal immigration issues. Rounding up horrible MS-13 creeps, fighting and winning the court battles regarding refuge policies, attacking sanctimonious cities in a way none of us thought possible in the modern age, etc.

Not to mention taking on Planned Parenthood, looking into college campus fascists regarding free speech and discrimination against whites and Asians, and investigating leaks.

These are absolutely NOT the actions of a guy who is a deep state or Dem mole or whatever nonsense some suggest.

Most FR folks would agree the DOJ/FBI has been made rotten to the core and weaponized by prior admins over years and years. Yet they think Sessions can fix that overnight. And that he should, ironically, behave like prior DOJ political hacks and publicize secrets things and metaphorically hang people without trials.

Good proceeds more slowly than evil.

Plenty of Monday morning AG’s here say Sessions/Trump should have done this or that. And it’s OK to regret Sessions’s recusal on an emotional level. But it is something, in my opinion, which occurred mostly because Jeff is an uncommonly honest politician.

Who knows? Maybe Trump actually does have some sort of Spock-like 3-d chess abilities. Because, as folks here seem to forget, Trump can do/order any of the things the Never-Jeff folks desire - including firing Sessions. But there is no way that just firing everybody in sight would have worked out as well in the long run - politically anyway - as the current situation where the deep state is essentially hanging itself. Which is far more effective going forward if we want to win the battle for the hearts and minds of the less attentive majority of the voting public.

Essentially everybody in news/politics proclaimed the grand morals and credentials of Comey at one time. And Mueller. Etc. Now they are being shown to be the real colluding devils in a way that the public would never have known if we just followed the hindsight of the Never-Jeffers.
