Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Sunday said he cannot imagine a government shutdown taking place days before the Christmas holiday if Congress cannot strike a deal on a spending bill, adding that he also cannot rule out the possibility that it may take place.
"I cant rule it out, but I can't imagine it occurring," Mnuchin told host Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday."
The finance chief said if Congress cannot reach a deal by Friday, the deadline to pass a spending bill, then they would have to pass a "short term extension" into January in order to gain time to come to an agreement.

I’m going to go way out on a limb here. I think we’ll survive. After all, Santa isn’t a government employee, he’ll still be delivering presents on Christmas Eve.
I hope the leftards don’t suddenly realize that this is not 1995 and Trump isn’t Gingrich.
They’ve been crying ‘oh no! government shutdown!’ for so long that nobody cares anymore.
If there is a shutdown, do not give government employees a paid vacation. NO PAY FOR NO WORK.
“”they would have to pass a “short term extension””
WOW - that would certainly be something new!
NO PAY FOR NO WORK.
-
Can we make that apply to our Attorney General, as well, please?
I believe at the end of past government shutdowns, all of the “lost wages” have been returned to government employees. No downside for them.
I hope Trump takes a different approach. The Democrats force a shutdown? Well, that’s a few weeks in which you don’t get paid. Write your representative if you don’t like it.
Mnuchin is sending the message that he is prepared.
I’m curious, actually, if they can run the government without borrowed money. I’ll bet Mnuchin is prepared to show they can.
That is a great danger for them, imho.
Aaaaaaaaaaaargh.
The government does NOT shut down.
Dang it.
This is kabuki theater. Getting so it happens at every budget year. Albeit, this “Christmas” thing is a new angle for the dems, trying to invoke the nation’s heartstrings, it will take the same route, as always. The government shuts down, one side caves, and they come up with a temporary budget to “get by”, and...there we are.
Obama tried the “shutting out the veterans” deal, and the most popular government sites, but it was resolved by a “temp” deal.
When do we get a professional government and stop all of this snowflake posturing? Even the best dog and pony show gets tiresome after a while.
The government normally shuts down two days before Christmas anyway so what’s the problem?
The Government is shut down today and the Nation seems to be just fine.
Government “shutdown”?
MAKE. OUR. DAY.
Government NEVER shuts down.
Do not adopt the language of liberalism and the media.
Mnuchin is an a$$hole that made his fortune from a sweet deal with the FDIC during the bank crisis. He was in the right place at the right time.
Who is going to complain about a week off between Christmas and New Years?
This is not a real government shutdown. Its a way to avoid a recess that Trump can use to make some changes.

There are plenty of folks who do think a government shut down is a big deal. There are many in the media that will be telling them so.
If the Government shuts down two days before Christmas, there will be wall to wall coverage of the impact on government employees Christmas plans. There will be interviews of these employees complaining that they can’t buy gifts.
The thing to remember is that all those complaining government employees back in 1995 were those who were full time union types, ie, those the government pays to administer the government union.
all the gifts have been purchased, decorations are hung. No one will go hungry or cold. But tune in to the MSM & Twitter ...
