Bernie Sanders concedes defeat on tax reform: 'We did everything that we could'

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said opponents of the Republican tax reform plan did all they could to stop it and essentially conceded defeat before a vote scheduled for Tuesday.

Sanders said on CBS’ “Face The Nation” there were too many forces opposing Democrats that they could not overcome.

“We did everything that we could. But at the end of the day what you had is people like [Treasury Secretary Steven] Mnuchin, who is worth $300 to 400 million; the president of the United States, who is worth several billion dollars, as you mentioned; from four or five thousand lobbyists doing everything they could to write a bill which significantly benefits the wealthiest people in this country and the largest corporations,” he said.

Congress is set to send a conference bill, cutting tax rates for most Americans and closing many popular deduction loopholes, to President Trump this week. The Senate is expected to vote on the bill Tuesday.

Sanders called the bill a major win for corporations but a huge hit for the middle class, who will see their tax rates increase after the cuts expire in 10 years.

“The way this bill is written is the tax breaks for corporations are now permanent, why weren't the tax breaks for middle class made permanent?” he said. “Because it has to do with the priorities of the folks who wrote that legislation. And their job is to represent multi-national corporations, not working families. That's where we are today.”

Saw Bernie this morning on a talk show lambasting how this tax plan only benefited millionaires and billionaires. Ironically Bernie certainly is a millionaire with three lavish homes and who knows how much money his wife scammed from a now defunct college. His rants seemed pretty hollow given his lifestyle
