Probably vastly overoptimistic initial estimates.

At the same time, it’s probably an unwise regulatory regime that adds costs too. The nuke biz needs to run with good quality control principles.

I thought Westinghouse’ nuclear business was acquired by Toshiba.

Yes, to achieve Six Sigma, a process must not produce more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities (DPMO).

Wonder if Amazon has a position on this. Rumor has HQ2 going to GA.

And what makes costs and construction timelines double?

Extremely burdensome regulation put in place by envirowackos at EPA and frivolous lawsuits heard by hand-picked judges, local NIMBY folks, and any other obstacle imaginable - and that’s just in the planning stages ...

Plants will likely follow Washington State’s WOOPS project into mothballs.

Ask Lockheed, the developers of the F-35.

Probably vastly overoptimistic initial estimates.

Environmentalist lawyers & activists, Liberal politicians looking to score points, local government regulators seeking brownie points for when they run for higher office, NIMBYs with placards and nothing else to do with their retirement...

A: The simplest and most correct answer: govt.

Govt and its lackeys, EPA\environ wackos, unions, red tape, ever-changing rules/regs...

How many DECADES behind Europe\World is the U.S. because *GOVT* hasn’t given the thumbs-up on the newer designs/better outputs/etc.??

Hell, we can’t can’t even re-refine the ‘waste’ to use in OTHER plants (Carter era decree IIRC). Brilliant!

And if we have a particular critical part of the system we can ask more sigma than that, as well as failsafes.

The thing here is to base it on science not politics.

Part of what made the cost double was that the USA has lost the ability to construct this type of plant. Not to mention that regs changed in mid-construction.

My son-in-law is working on this project and he said it’s bad. And getting worse.

"And what makes costs and construction timelines double?

As posted by Fred Hayek, Westinghouse is a subsidiary of Toshiba. Toshiba is far far underwater after Fukashima melt down. The financial collapse of Toshiba took down any capacity they had to manage and upgrade Westinghouse into a functional business, let alone a profitable one. Westinghouse wasn't anywhere close to budget, causing huge cost overruns, and pulling out of the construction process has required replacing them as prime contractor, which heaps on the overhead and costs. What a mess.

When I worked up in Massachusetts I knew a lot of electricians who worked on the Seabrook nuclear power plant. One of them told me the procedure for drilling a simple hole. It took 3 days and 3 different inspectors to do a 10-second job.
