'Chappaquiddick' Trailer Reveals Unsavory Ted Kennedy

If anybody feared that the upcoming Chappaquiddick movie would be a whitewash of Ted Kennedy, the recently released trailer should disabuse them of that notion. Legal Insurrection describes the movie as the "portrait of a weasel." Kate Erbland of IndieWire reviewed it as a Compelling Teddy Kennedy Biopic That Pulls No Punches.

“the reason it took him so long to raise the alarm was because of the time he spent trying to talk one of his cousins into saying he was driving.”

IIRC, that was covered in the mini-series on Reelz, “The Kennedys”, which was not in any way flattering to the clan of pervs. If you haven’t seen it, it’s pretty good. They showed old Joe as a monster.

The only Kennedys in that movie who I could respect in even a small way were Ethel and Joan — and they weren’t Kennedys.

Old Joe hated “Anglo white” American. He was the genuine Genesis of the 1965 Immigration Act.

Kennedy was driving. This is a theory that it was the only way he could put it behind him was to say he was driving if she was, etc.

Joe Gargan was Ted Kennedy’s boyhood friend and “fixer” for most of his adult life, the one who was at the bridge later with Kennedy before he jumped in the water and swam over to Edgartown.

During the heated discussion on the shore, where Kennedy was lying on his back in the sand, trying to figure out how to save his political skin, he jumped up and exclaimed “Why can’t we say she was driving” and was immediately squashed on that.

Joe Gargan was later ostracized and thrown under the bus by the Kennedy clan for speaking the truth on the events. (he only knew what happened from the point Kennedy appeared back at the cottage saying there had been an accident)

I think some of the progeny would like to be more active in politics and move up the ranks eventually into the White House. Maybe this movie will slow down their drive to the senate, governor’s mansion or who knows where.

Yes, and I believe that part of the story was developed by Jack Anderson.

Just as we need to nip Chelsea’s political career in the bud.

He did. But in the following 52 years no one has proposed
repeal of the Act or serious amendments.

Camelot was the dream of the WW2 generation. They are mostly gone. If you tell a millenial what Teddy did and that he became the moral leader of the RATs they won’t believe it.

I’m afraid history is finally catching up with the scummy Kennedys.

Huh? So who was? Mary Jo?

Yes.

The version we know doesn't answer three important questions (or at least doesn't answer them very well.) 1) Why did Mary Jo leave her purse at the party if Teddy was driving her home for the night. 2) Why was Kennedy seen the next morning laughing and talking with people and in no particular hurry like nothing ever happened? You would think he would at least be in a state of aggitation trying to get himself out of his situation. 3. Kennedys driver was at the party, so why didn't he drive them?

So, the other version says the two went off to "park" intending to come back later. They pulled off on a secluded road. The sherrif said that he saw a car that matched that description and approached but the car peeled off. So, it's possible that Kennedy ran away to avoid law enforcement and left Mary Jo with the car to go back to the party. He goes back to his hotel thinking she would just get back on her own. But, she had been drinking, it was dark and she didn't know where she was going. And in trying to get back to the party, drove off the bridge.

The next day Kennedy makes up the "I tried to save her" story, but it blew up in his face and he was stuck withn it.

Just let her talk for 30 minutes. She may do it all by herself. But a movie would be great. The uranium story
might just end Chelsea’s political career.

And then there’s the Obama kids, they’re sowing their oats now, but eventually, they’ll straighten up and carry on the “family business”.

Back in the day when I was 9 years old my mom and aunt took me to the Senate Gallery a while after Chappaquiddick.

Speaking in hushed voice my aunt pointed out Kennedy to my mom. In the voice of a typical loudmouthed obnoxious kid I said “is that the man who killed that woman?”

The audible background coming from the senate floor went silent for at least a second or two. Close to 50 years ago and I can picture it in my mind clear as crystal.

We need to end this love affair with the Kennedy mystique (mistake?). Especially considering the sexual exploits of those wild wild Kennedy boys, if this #metoo (#meTOOL?) campaign has any meaning. Never mind removing statues and renaming anything named for the major players in the old Confederacy. There’s an airport in NYC, a performing arts center and an old football stadium in DC and many highways, byways, bridges, schools, buildings, parks and landmarks that need to be renamed.
