Pennsylvania Couple Told To Take Down Jesus Sign Because It’s Apparently ‘Offensive’

A Pennsylvania couple was instructed to take down a Christmas display featuring a “Jesus” sign because it was reportedly “offensive” to their neighbors.

Mark and Lynn Wivell put some Christmas decorations in their front yard on Dec. 16. The centerpiece of their display was a sign with the name of Jesus Christ.

The couple was dumbfounded when they received an email from their homeowners association days after putting up the decorations asking them to remove the display. One neighbor even called it offensive.

“We know that Christmas was about the birth of Jesus,” Wivell said. “I was quite shocked it offended somebody, but I guess in today’s world I shouldn’t have been.”

The homeowners association said that it is not the content of the sign, but rather that the Wivell’s decorations were not in accordance to the association’s rules.

The Wivells have not been formally penalized for the sign, and they plan to keep it up through Jan. 15.

Many new neighborhoods in some states also incorporate an HOA.

Developers (they own and are selling the land) like to write them into the deed restrictions on the belief they are “preserving the look of the neighborhood”, and as things go own folks remember their developments, because they “still look good today” due to the HOAs. That’s they theory I was told when we discovered a house we were buying in Houston back in the 1980s came with an HOA as part of the deed.

Nonsense. Sue them, the complainers and the HOA into oblivion for interference with their rights as homeowners and Americans

We lived in on the Main St. of a small town in Maryland. One year after buying our home, the small apartment building next to us was sold and turned into Section-8 housing. It was a nightmare of drug dealing and prostitution. Our 10 year old daughter was witness to an attempted murder when one resident slit the throat of another. Thanks to modern trauma care and sophisticated ICU care the man lived.

Our house became unmarketable. Fortunately, we were able to sell it to an agency that was going to use as a group home for mentally retarded adults.

Since then we have lived in 1 HOA development, 2 HOA condos, and owned 1 HOA office-condo. We have never had a problem in 17 years. We can travel any time without a single worry about our property. What a relief!

I for one would not want to live there anymore. So I am going to make them pay me far more than my home is worth. There would be no agreement that I wouldn’t sue afterwards. Thus suing would still be an option, and I would exercise it.

Unfortunately it does.
Sad to say.

My wife’s ex-residence has a real nit-picky HOA Some of the stuff it “cites” are laughable . . . It’s like they never had anything better to do, so as in the First Principle of Bureaucracies, it tries to justify its own existence with silly citations

We decided some time ago to ignore the first one and force them to send a “reminder” At least that gives the busybodies something to do rather than hassle the next one

I’m currently VP in my association. My primary reason for getting on the board was to nip s*** like this in the bud. I definitely want to not live here, but that’s primarily due to not having grass to mow or a backyard I can shoot in ;-)
