Alberto Fujimori: Peru's ex-president pardoned

Imprisoned former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has been pardoned by incumbent leader Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

Mr. Kuczynski's office said in a statement that Fukimori, 79, was being released on health grounds.

Fujimori-who was in power from 1990 to 2000-was recently taken from prison to hospital because of low blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythm.

He has been serving a 25-year sentence for human rights abuses and corruption.....

He was admired by some Peruvians for combating Maoist rebels, whereas his critics consider him a corrupt dictator.

Fujimori has been in and out of hospital for a variety of health problems in recent years.

The presidential pardon comes just days after Fujimori's supporters in Congress helped Mr. Kuczynski avoid impeachment over alleged corruption.

Opposition politicians allege that the government has promised the supporters to free Fujimori in exchange for their backing.

Mr. Kuczynski denies the claim.....

A Christmas Eve pardon in Peru.

Its the lead story on NHK World TV from Japan right now.

Video from the hospital where Fujimori is shows supporters celebrating outside.

When I heard about the current president relying on Fujimori supporters in Congress to avoid impeachment and Fujimori being taken to hospital the other day, I strongly suspected this was coming.

Many admire the former president indeed for breaking the back of Communist terrorists who wreaked havoc on Peru decades ago.

Fujimori was also an unabashed capitalist who instituted market reforms in Peru.

There is an epic movie/book sitting there, and waiting to be made.

The whole story...Shining Path....Abimael Guzman...San Cristobal of Huamanga University....Fujimoroi...is a fascinating tale.

In the end, to remove Shining Path and it’s threat on society....Fujimoroi had to take some extreme steps.

I see in 2012 Shining Path members went and gathered signatures- the overwhelming majority from students too young to know anything of the group’s past methodology and crimes- to try to be legitimized as a political party.

Meanwhile they grind away trying to establish in the minds of the ignorant a false moral equivalency between themselves and the government that finally beat them to shed a much blame for the 30,000 dead as they can because the government killed people too. No doubt it did, as terrorists exist only because of their willingness to hide behind skirts and in schools and to extricate them is never an easy task... but the old terrorists hope that people will forget that if there had been no Sendero Luminaso there wouldn’t have been any dead- not from the terrorists and neither from the government which would have had anything to respond to.

Soros was very unhappy with Fujimori’s wiping out of the terrorist Shining Path and their drug dealing.

Soros bankrolled his own stooge opposition politicians to Fujimori and put him out of office.

Then Soros had them declare Fujimori a criminal for wiping out the Shining Path.

Result? The Shining Path was back in business.

Soros has manipulated many countries around the world in this fashion.

Before Obama, I could read a story like this, shake my head and chuckle about banana republics and what happens to Presidents when they leave office. Now it’s not so funny.

I admire Fulimori for saving Peru from the “Shining Path” movement of terror.
He did take extreme measures, but they were needed.

Glad he is free.

Fujimori is a national hero. He saved Peru. When he took office Shining Path had made much of Peru into a no-go-zone, and was now coming into the suburbs of the capital. They were lost.

He declared war, I mean really declared war, and destroyed them.

Politicians who were too weak to confront real evil, found their courage once it was safe, and went to war against the man who saved them. He initially went into exile, and lived in Japan for a while, and then finally came home and accepted a life sentence.

No one as far as I know was willing to speak or stand up for him.

Anyone remember the movie “The Dancer Upstairs”?

A few years ago my son married a wonderful girl from Peru.
Last night we spent Christmas eve with 4 related families from Peru.
I spent two hours discussing politics with the men.
They all support this president and say like the USA, this is all ado by those who can’t accept the results of elections.
A very fine time was had by all.
Merry Christmas to all.

Curious, do your Peruvian friends converse in Spanish or Portuguese as their native language?
