Political tags such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort.
---Robert A. Heinlein
Heinlein knew about tribalism.
The noblest sounding things can go all to hell with tribalism. For my tribe but not for thine. Color is only one way that a tribe can form.
I refuse to be an intellectual slave to any “ism” of the world. My own bent is to be an old fashioned liberal, one of the kind that didn’t believe in trying to beat everybody over the head to control them, but who did solidly believe in a sovereign yet gracious God. America has much room to be even greater than it had been through a better grasp of God than ever before. Whether it can or will occupy that room, only God knows, but we are not amiss to pray earnestly for it. As God controls what souls are born at what times.
