Top law enforcement leaders say they have had no bigger advocate this year than President Trump, and they are hopeful he has set the stage for fewer dangerous confrontations between officers and the public, better-equipped departments and, ultimately, reductions in crime.
Early signs are encouraging. Line-of-duty deaths, including fatal shootings of police officers, are down this year. Preliminary reports from major cities indicate that crime increases reported in the past two years are subsiding.
The Justice Departments new focus on policing results has also toned down tensions between the federal government and local agencies. Meanwhile, racially tinged standoffs between police and the public have dissipated.
But police say they are still worried about the challenges of the opioid epidemic and wary of how they will balance the Trump administrations focus on curbing illegal immigration without alienating immigrant communities with which they are trying to build trust.
Despite the occasional tiffs with federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies, Mr. Trump has steadfastly praised the work of local police departments, providing a much-needed boost in morale for officers across the country.
Arguably the most significant thing a president can do is use the bully pulpit to reflect his support for law enforcement, said National Fraternal Order of Police Executive Director Jim Pasco. To this point in his presidency, he has certainly gone out of his way to do that. That resonates within the profession, and its received very favorably.
Police said one big change is Attorney General Jeff Sessions curtailment of a favorite Obama-era tool: court-approved consent decrees to force reforms on local police departments. Departments that faced questions about officer misconduct or use-of-force felt they were being pushed into consent decrees that last for years at considerable cost.

More Winning.
MAGA!
The wheat is being separated from the chaff.
“Early signs are encouraging. Line-of-duty deaths, including fatal shootings of police officers, are down this year. “
Oh that’s great. How about fatal shootings of innocent civilians and pets? When is that going down to zero?
Write a book on it, genius.
According to some copsuckers there IS no such thing as innocent civilians, and of course, all pit bulls deserve death.
One thing I’ve learned here and from other supposedly ‘conservative’ sites is that there is pretty much no shooting by a cop so horrendous that somebody won’t have an excuse, a rationalization or give the officer the benefit of the doubt.
“Write a book on it, genius.”
5 years police in a suburb adjacent to shitcago. Had gun out twice..both on active burglar alarms. No shots fired. But that was in 70’s when America was still America.
Thanks for your service.
You’re correct, that was in 70s when America was still America and LEOs weren’t being executed on our streets.
Write a book on it, genius.
Hes got enough material for 5 or 6 at least.
Genius.

Actually they were, but why let facts get in the way of your prejudices.
Right?

Wrong, I guess you want to nit pick which is fine with me.
I lived and worked in SoCA when that incident took place and remember it well.
I’ve got no prejudices on this and as a matter of fact my FIL, retired LEO in ‘60s and BIL retired LEO in ‘80s on disability due to dirtbag hitting him with car, both in SoCA.
Being a cop isnt even in the top ten of dangerous professions.
L
How comforting for widows and kids of LEOs killed in the line of duty and what does that have to do with the article I posted?

Merely pointing out that cops arent in as much real danger as say a commercial fisherman, gardener, or cab driver on the west side of Chicago.
I completely support good cops. But I loathe bad ones.
And I really loathe anyone who supports bad cops.
L
I couldn’t agree with you more!
Trump frequently has a way of letting those to whom he has given the benefit of a doubt, hang themselves in public. If the honor factor in police departments does not increase, pretty soon a tweet will come from a different direction. Jerusalem wasn’t rebuilt in a day. Watch and see.
I’d encourage continued scorekeeping, noting the most honorable policing agencies as well as the least honorable ones and those in between.
Truth is ultimately the best weapon. To ask why Locale B has stinking cops while Locale A has great cops, is to put the light where it belongs. People who don’t do anything BUT complain soon become viewed as the boys who cry wolf.
Id encourage continued scorekeeping,
I encourage a return to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peelian_principles

I agree, can’t argue with that.
As though these are mutually exclusive things?
If Peelism is good then the truth will encourage its more widespread adoption. If it’s so much lefty feelgood, then the truth won’t.
Actually they were executing cops in the 70s also....it is just that bonemaker cared more when he was in the crosshairs.
