Ron Paul: Trump may be vulnerable to 2020 GOP primary challenge
Washington Examiner ^ | Dec. 27, 2017

Former Texas Rep. Ron Paul says a yearlong economic boom under President Trump is “a bit of an illusion” and that debt, inflation, and inequality could cause turmoil that benefits a “hardcore nucleus” of libertarians.

The libertarian Republican leader told the Washington Examiner that Trump could face a strong challenger in the 2020 GOP primary, especially if “things are really much worse."

“The big opening for us is the fact that this system is coming apart. We’re on the verge of something like what happened in ‘89 when the Soviet system just collapsed,” he said. “I’m just hoping our system comes apart as gracefully as the Soviet system.”

“this system is coming apart. “

The only “system” that’s coming apart is uniparty/media cronyism/sexploitation.

The libertarian wing might be a tool for Establishment Republicans, but they are from from a plurality of the party.

Trump peels off the ones who appreciate that he is not a rabid Krauthammer/Kristal/McCain interventionist and economic libertarians appreciate that he is serious about peeling back regulations.

Love ya, Rand, but you’re the only papabile libertarian-leaning Republican for 2020, and you risk losing your brand if you take on Trump then, only to be humiliated.

Tell ya what. Do what you do best, stand with Cruz or Lee or whoever against McConnell when necessary, continue to say things that have to be said, and in 2024 you and Pence can vie to be the President’s successor. You’ll get a better hearing then, and you will have the right enemies— The Establishment Republicans, who are only waiting for an opportunity to reclaim the top spot. Don’t be their unwitting tool. That’s what Evan McMullin is for.

“I’m just hoping our system comes apart as gracefully as the Soviet system.”

This is a really curious statement.

Romania tried to destroy itself. Yugoslavia went to full-scale civil war for years. Czechoslovakia disentegrated. Georgia was invaded by Russia twice. Chechnya and Russia have been fighting each other off and on for years. Ukraine and Russia are now engaged in a proxy civil war, Russia annexed the Crimea. And I haven’t even listed any of the issues going on in the former Soviet “Stan” countries.

I would most definitely not call this graceful.

Here come the 27 dwarfs to challenge Trump!

He might draw one credible challenger. The Flakes and Corkers are afraid of their own shadows. Maybe an establishment guy who wants to set himself up for 2024 (I wuld say Rubio, but Trump has his number, and Rubio knows it), or a total condescending ego like Sasse.

This was about a comment by Ron Paul, not his son Rand.

As I said on the other thread (this is a duplicate thread), I believe these libertarians have a valuable role to play in the GOP. Without them, the party would have little resistance to its tendency to embrace the open-borders, big-government globalism that has dominated the political scene in Washington for more than 25 years.

I guess his point is that there wasn’t a single incident with the extensive nuclear arsenal of the former Soviet Union that would have caused a global disaster.
