Utah Republicans on edge waiting for Orrin Hatch's re-election decision
The Washington Examiner ^ | Dec 29, 2017, 12:01 AM | David M. Drucker

Republicans in Utah are on edge as they await a decision from Sen. Orrin Hatch on 2018 that could determine whether Mitt Romney’s political career has one more act.

Hatch is reconsidering retirement after receiving encouragement from President Trump and his allies, and soaking up praise for shepherding a historic tax overhaul in his role as Senate Finance Committee chairman.

The 83-year-old previously signaled plans to step aside after seven terms and clear a path for Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee and a prominent Trump critic, to succeed him.

Hatch is something of an icon in Utah, but his waffling isn’t sitting well with all Republicans. Some worry Hatch will blow an opportunity to send Romney to Washington, and possibly put his seat in jeopardy in the midterm.

“If Sen. Hatch’s selfish clinging to power prevented Utah and the nation from the influence and impact of a possible Sen. Romney, that would be a tragic stain on the Hatch legacy,” a Republican insider in Utah told the Washington Examiner, on condition of anonymity in order to speak candidly.

Hatch runs and gets re-elected.

Then, Hatch resigns early into his term and the good folks in Utah have Mittens.

Hatch will be 84, Romney 71 when during the 2018 campaign. They will be 90 and 77 respectively at the end of a 6 year term if elected.

The problems of this nation are immense. One of the problems we have in Congress are too many representatives and senators in the twilight of their lives making decisions impacting the future course of the nation. Democrats have the same issue, political offices are filled with people in the their 70’s and 80’s.

If the GOP truly wants to broaden its base it will run successful conservatives in their 40’s and 50’s for these offices, not the faces of the past.

We are being ruled by people with deteriorating mental capacities, brain cancer in the case of John McCain and Tedder Kennedy, mayes more senators with cancer on the brain, maybe other brain disorders that we have no idea about.

“If Sen. Hatch’s selfish clinging to power prevented Utah and the nation from the influence and impact of a possible Sen. Romney, that would be a tragic stain on the Hatch legacy,” a Republican insider .......

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mittens, after his horrible, personal speech against Trump during the campaign, would be a Never Trumper "influence and impact" in the Senate. The 'Republican insider' has got to be a Never Trumper.

Hatch is elderly. We do need younger folks in Congress rather than the Pelosis, McCains, Cochrans, Conyers (now gone), etc. HOWEVER, Hatch appears to have gotten aboard the Trump Train - his comments in the last couple of months have been significant in regard to being pro-Trump & his comments after the tax bill passed appeared to really be from his heart. At this point, Trump needs all the help he can get - Mittens will lead Senate/Republican resistance & Hatch will help Trump with his agenda. Hatch has irritated me in the past & I certainly never thought I would say this, but I hope Hatch stays.

If McCain can stick around after he’s already died, so can Hatch.
We don’t want no stinking Romney.

What if Romney is dirty with McCain on subversive activity (dossier type stuff) which will eventually come out and the President has asked Hatch to stay on to avoid the awkward situation of having to remove a sitting senator.

A seriously deranged Utahn. Sadly, these “insiders” are a big part of the Republican party.

Washingtonitis—a mental condition marked by power, greed, and corruption.

You know, these older men and women (Republicans) at least have a healthy knowledge of the history of the United States. The young people coming up were taught a corrupt image of how America came to be. I don’t know the answer to the problem, but I’m not opposed to the older generation continuing to share their knowledge.

An 83 year old Orin Hatch is a lot better than Romney.

I agree with you. That said, in this instance, are you saying that you’d prefer Mitt Romney, arch enemy of President Trump? Because he’s waiting in the wings and Utah will make him their US Senator the moment Hatch decides to throw in the towel. And If for some reason, Mitt doesn’t “answer the call,” You have his mini-me, Egg Mc Muffin standing by. Romney may be “Brother Romney to the Utah Mormons, but he’s a sack of $hit to the rest of us.

Sadly, Orrin has immense power and can keep his wrinkled hind parts in place until the Reaper removes him.

When these old lions remain in place, for either party, it prevents some solid younger conservatives from getting their chance to make a difference.
