Pakistan's government hits back at Trump over foreign aid threat (tr)

The Pakistani government shot back at President Trump on Monday after he threatened to stop hundreds of millions in foreign aid, accusing the U.S. of overlooking “safe havens of terrorists who murder Pakistanis.”

“Pak as anti-terror ally has given free to US: land & air communication, military bases & intel cooperation that decimated Al-Qaeda over last 16yrs, but they have given us nothing but invective & mistrust,” the Pakistan Ministry of Defence said in statement posted to Twitter. “They overlook cross-border safe havens of terrorists who murder Pakistanis.”

Trump tweeted Monday morning the U.S. would no longer be investing as much in foreign aid to Pakistan as it has under previous presidents unless the country contributes better to anti-terrorism measures in Afghanistan.

“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!” Trump tweeted.

Pakistan has been a staging ground for American troops in the war in Afghanistan, and the two countries’ militaries have often worked together to apprehend terrorists along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

However, Pakistan has proved to be a complicated partner, as was shown when the country allegedly knew terrorist leader Osama bin Laden was hiding in the country for years before he was tracked down by American special operatives and killed in Abottabad.

Reports surfaced last week the Trump administration was considering withholding $255 million in funding over its frustrations with the Pakistani government.

Full title: Pakistan's government hits back at Trump over foreign aid threat: US has 'given us nothing but mistrust'

How could you not trust a country who claimed they didn't know Osama Bin Laden was hiding less than a mile from one of their most elite military academies?

It’ll be interesting to see if Trump can actually do anything to end foreign aid, including military aid, to Pakistan. The US alliance with Pakistan goes back to Pakistan’s founding and has outlasted multiple presidencies. The Deep State has a lot of love for Pakistan and its generals, despite all of the harm that nation has done us (aside from the Taliban, 9/11, and harboring Osama bin Laden, neither Iran nor North Korea would possess a nuclear capability if not for Pakistan).

Pakistan is the @$$hole of the world. Low IQ, violent, corrupt, in-bred Islamist hell-hole. It produces nothing good or useful to the world.

This only proves how two-faced the Pakistanis are.

Pakistan got nukes, how? Because of our aid freed them up to do so, much like India. How can we roll the clock back on both or get them to nuke each other into the oblivion. The world would be a better place without both of them.

(Paki) officials insisted they will do no more to help...

Well, bye. And bye to your aid.

For many years, the threat has been that Pakistan would shut down our supply lines into Afghanistan (through their territory), if we cut off the cash.

My guess is that Trump had more leverage on them to prevent that, before he launched.

The new Afghan strategy that was developed in 2017, had getting tough on Pakistan as one of its key planks. Some planning has been going on, about how best to do this.

Pakistan is a backstabbing safe zone for terrorists. Pride is a harsh taskmaster. They need to be kicked back into the stone age of history.

This "alliance" has also generally embarrassed (at best) or tainted (at worst) U.S. politicians and military commanders. Nobody in DC likes to talk honestly about the Paks.

The worst is the Waziristan valley area from Wana to Miram Shah. The Taliban hide there and swim in the culture.

Pakistan had nukes well before we used Pak as a base in 2001. We have been a watchdog and protective force of their stockpile.

Like it or not, we have to work with them.

” The US alliance with Pakistan goes back to Pakistan’s founding and has outlasted multiple presidencies. “

That’s because India was on the other side. Now that our relations with India are much better, it’s time to switch sides and let the Iranians support Pakistan.

Not so much the Iranians - it'll be the Chinese. Pakistan has a long-standing relationship with the PRC.
