President Donald Trump excoriated his predecessor Tuesday, castigating the transfer of funds during the Obama administration to the Iranian government, writing that the money never benefited the Iranian people, and was instead funneled to terrorist organizations.
In a tweet Tuesday afternoon, President Trump again praised anti-government Iranian protests who have taken to the streets since Thursday to protest government corruption and the country’s high unemployment rates.
“The people of Iran are finally acting against the brutal and corrupt Iranian regime. All of the money that President Obama so foolishly gave them went into terrorism and into their ‘pockets.’ The people have little food, big inflation and no human rights. The U.S. is watching!” […]
In 2016, the Obama administration came under fire following revelations that in January of that year, the US had transferred some $400 million in cash to Iran at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport. The payment took place the same day — January 17th — as the release of five Americans who had been held by the Iranian regime.
Defenders of the payment claimed the transfer was not a ransom payment to secure the prisoners’ release, but instead was part of a long-running dispute between the US and Tehran regarding a canceled weapons procurement deal from the 1970s. While the Shah had made a $400 million down payment on the deal prior to his overthrow in 1979, the US had refused to give the money to the fundamentalist Islamic republic which toppled the Shah’s government after the deal was scrapped.
The Obama administration later paid an additional $1.3 billion to Iran — money it claimed was interest from the $400 million held by the US from 1979 to 2016. …

The mullahs needed the hard currency cash to pay their goons and thugs. Those boys don’t work for chump change. Uh oh! The cash is gone. No more Obama. What is a mullah to do? Right about now the goons are weighing their options and wonder if they will get paid to continue cracking heads for the mullahs. No doubt the mullahs are begging the French and Germans for cash.
It wasn’t foolish, it was very calculated.

This would have happened much sooner had Obama not thrown the mullahs a lifeline by lifting sanctions on them for his ill advised nuclear deal.
Now it is going to be tougher for the EU and the rest of the West not to reimpose sanctions when the Trump couches it as a call in support of “human rights”. They would not do it if there were nuclear treaty violations as we had to twist their arm to impose them in the first instance. So this may be an opportune time for a twofer, i.e, hastening the potential fall of a dangerous regime as well as ridding ourselves of the ill advised nuclear treaty.
The EU is on the Mullahs’ side, for now. Especially when they can use Iran as a wedge against Israel. So the EU is largely keeping quiet.

Personally, I’m surprised that anyone is surprised by this.
But then I’ve grown sort of jaded in the last several years.
Treasonously is the appropriate descriptor.
All bank notes delivered should have been stamped “OBAMA IRAN” as the USA did all bank notes sent to HAWAII back in WW II. That way such notes could have been declared NON-NEGOTIABLE if an enemy took over.

The Obama administration openly stated that they were disregarding Iran's other nefarious behavior in the interest of getting the nuclear deal. Was that a dumb tradeoff? It depends on how well the deal prevents Iran from having nuclear weapons. We made deals with the Soviet Union, including during WWII, and no doubt they also were untrustworthy and intent on doing us harm.
Obama did not give money “foolishly” to Iran. That money served his purposes very well. His purposes are inimical to America and to Christianity. The appropriate adverb is certainly not “foolishly” but may be something more like “insidiously” or even “treasonously,” but certainly not “foolishly.”
