Al Franken resigns: Here's what happens to his Senate seat
FOX ^ | January 2, 2018 | By Kaitlyn Schallhorn

Sen. Al Franken officially resigned on Jan. 2, nearly a month after he announced his plans to step down from Congress amid numerous sexual misconduct allegations that began in November of last year.

Aides to the senator told Fox News that Franken has provided his letter of resignation to Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton. Minnesota Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, who is replacing Franken, is expected to be sworn in on Wednesday.

Franken, a Minnesota Democrat who has been in office since 2009, was plagued by multiple accusations of sexual misconduct over the past month and faced a Senate Ethics Committee investigation. The allegations began after Los Angeles radio anchor Leeann Tweeden accused him of forcibly kissing her during a 2006 USO tour.

Franken announced he would resign after more than two dozen key Democratic lawmakers called for him to step down.

Here’s what will happen to his Senate seat once he leaves office, according to Minnesota election law. 1. Governor appoints a new senator

Gov. Mark Dayton would appoint a new senator to fill Franken’s seat, when he resigns, Ryan Furlong, a spokesman for the Minnesota secretary of state’s office, told Fox News.

A Democrat, Minnesotans could expect Dayton to appoint a member of his own party.

The newly-appointed senator would be in office until at least Nov. 2018 when a special election would be scheduled. The appointed senator would not be obligated to run in that election.

Minnesota is one of 36 states where a governor will make an appointment to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. 2. A special election is scheduled for November 2018

A special election would be scheduled for Nov. 2018 – and the winner would remain in the Senate for the remainder of what was Franken's term.

If they can find a DJT [political] clone, the seat may be winnable when it comes back up.

Only if they are running against a Hillary Clinton clone. Don't underestimate Clinton's unpopularity or the state's liberal core. A liberal Democrat like Tina Smith would kill a Trump clone.

I thought he wasn’t actually going to do it.
Me too. Dems always find a way to wiggle out of responsibility.

I think both Senate seats will now be in contention in November. If republicans can resist the temptation to self destruct, they should be able to pick up one.

Not a chance. The Minnesota Republicans haven't been able to find a name challenger to Klobuchar. Who are they going to get to run for Franken's seat against Smith?

He wasn’t going to, if Roy Moore was elected.

That’s why he delayed until now.

Some have mentioned Michelle Bachmann. Many on another thread on this subject didn’t want her to run for Senate, however.

I hate to lose an election just by default, which is what will happen if no prominent Republican steps forward.

Maybe he’ll go back to Saturday Night Live where he will fit right in, both politically and with an utter lack of comedic talent.

Some have mentioned Michelle Bachmann.

Bachmann may have won a congressional district but that doesn't automatically translate into a statewide race. I don't think she would do very well for the Senate.

Might have been different if Moore had won.

There is a battle to prove which party is better towards women. Up until very recently, the Democrat party had this locked in very tightly. Doesn't make a difference that the Democrats are a lying bunch of SOBs.

Anyway, if Franken had not resigned, it would have hurt the Democrat party image.

The Senate is bad. But it was REALLY bad with that four eyed, fish lipped, Island of Dr. Moreau lookin' clown in it.

He was an embarrassment to this country.

Good riddance.

That’s OK Tom. There were lots of people at the link below who were convinced he wouldn’t resign and came up with all kinds of scenarios such this was a Democratic plot etc.
