83 percent funding cut by United Way strains Salvation Army partnership

The United Way of Waco-McLennan County’s decision to cut 83 percent of its funding to The Salvation Army of Waco has left Salvation Army officials scratching their heads and questioning the partnership with the nonprofit going into the new year.

The Salvation Army received the largest cut among the 21 local nonprofits the United Way funds. The cuts are part of an ongoing effort to transition from an allocation-based funding model to a grant-based model this year, and a result of a decline in donations in the past five years, United Way Executive Director Barbara Mosacchio said.

Mosacchio, who started the role in March, said the change is not a reflection on the Salvation Army’s work, despite the impression Salvation Army officials may have gotten. Salvation Army officials said they were blindsided by the cut and are unsure where they stand moving forward.

The United Way will make the change in February to streamline its funding model with a new strategic plan and a shift to focus on four core impac

All the liberals at work think united way is greatest thing since sliced bread and enthusiastically donate to it and then virtue signal about it during the yearly extortion drive. Before I knew anything about how evil united way is that alone was enough to make me distrust it.

Years ago I was talking to my management team about making donations. I said we should give to SA, the one openly gay guy was vehemently opposed to that. Fags hate the Salvation Army. That right there spoke volumes to me. All donations went to Salvation Army. Do not give a penny to united way. It is a scam.

Same here.

Had a boss try all sorts of intimidation tactics.

Then he tried shame.
The “Your Fair Share” slogan.

That’s when I told him I probably already gave a higher percentage of my income, to charitable causes, than he did, and that I volunteered x amount of hours a week and had been for y amount of years.

Then I got up and left.

Never question me about “my fair share”.

Easy to figure. Salvation Army = Christian charity. United Way = Secular scam that is increasingly hostile to Christianity.

Salvation Army should cut ties and find better partners.

It's better for the Salvation Army to cut themselves loose from the United Way.

The United Way runs their Charity organization like the Mafia. When I worked for hourly wages in my youthful and reckless years, they used the company management as a tool to demand participation and it was not optional. The threat that was leveed was that your non participation would be noted during your annual review.

Years later I told a Partner at a firm I was working at that I wasn't going to give to United Way because I had a penniless relative that need the money more. The Partner put me down for $2,500 that I never pledged. I never paid it, but they still tried to squeeze it out of me.

There's a long list of expletives I'd like to add here but I like Free Republic and will respect the rules.

This is why I donate directly to the Salvation Army and give nothing to United Way.

Why is the Salvation Army partnering with the United Way in the first place. . .like everything else these days. . .they have forgotten their roots. I have noticed their Salvation message waning over the years.

Back in the 1950’s my mother worked for a major corporation. One day her boss called her in. You are the only one from your department who hasn’t donated to the United Way. Please donate so we can have 100% participation. No, my mother said. I prefer to donate to my church instead.

Okay, said the boss. I’ll give you $5. Use that $5 to donate to the United Way. No, my mother said. That would not be ethical.

Mom was not fired. She was too good a worker.

Thankfully I have never been shaken down by my employer but the phenomenon is curious to me. Does the employer or manager get kickbacks? Why would they push so hard?

My response if I were shaken would be that my religious beliefs require my charitable acts to be anonymous.

“I’ve worked for companies that shook down departments to participate so they could boast 100% participation.”

So did I.

Back in the mid 80s I decided United Way was a big boondoggle and I refused to give.

My manager pleaded with me to donate, even if it was 10 cents a week. She wanted 100% participation.

I refused and never gave to UW again.

Many years ago I wanted to contribute to a cause that would help others. I was nowhere near as savvy politically as I am today. The UW had a drive where I worked and I started having $4 deducted per paycheck. Each year I increased the amount by one dollar. The year it reached $8 U stumbled across the list of things my money was going to support. That’s when the donations stopped.

My funds were going to support things I would never have supported on my own. That told me that this organization had it’s priorities screwed up, at least to my way of thinking.

Does the employer or manager get kickbacks? Why would they push so hard?

The company gets awards and bragging rights, especially for the higher ups. Upper management pressures the middle managers to pressure lower management. 100% participation is the company's way of "virtue signaling" as it's come to be called. For the employees, it truly comes down to participate or be labeled as someone who isn't a team player.
