Oregonians lose it when they realize they might have to start pumping their own gas

Of all the new laws going into effect Monday (legal cannabis in California, higher minimum wages in several states, and many more), you may be surprised about which one drew the most backlash online. It appears to be Oregon House Bill 2482, which allows people who live in counties with 40,000 residents or less to pump their own gas.

Oregonians aired their frustrations on Facebook over the new law. And just about everyone else in the country made fun of them.

New California laws going into effect in 2018 New era opens in California with first sales of recreational marijuana "I don't even know HOW to pump gas and I am 62, native Oregonian.....I say NO THANKS!" said Sandy Franklin on Facebook, in response to a post by local news station KTVL that asked for viewers' opinions on the new law.

The State Fire Marshal has opposed self serve gas in Oregon my entire life. You know, safety, for the kids. Probably think we're all going to go Zoolander and have gas fights if they let us pump our own. No surprise it's gotten into the culture here.

For me, it was the last time I bought gas in New Jersey - so, about 5 years ago.

Initially I would think they would start out with self serve and full serve, right? So people that are willing to pay more can still have someone pump their gas. Then over time everyone figures out they too can actually pump gas and save money and the full-serv goes away.

It’s like a time travel exercise.

Federal drug laws totally preempt Californicate laws. Where is little jeffy session to crack down under the constitution? He just let’s it go. No one has seen him in 30 days.

There people are unbelievable. I can remember doing this when I was about 11 years old at a gas station with my cousins.

What’s wrong with these people? Oh, never mind. They’re liberals.

If you aren’t capable of pumping your own gas, then I doubt that you’re capable of wiping your ***.

As a teenager, I worked at a “service station”. I fixed flat tires, changed light and signal bulbs, oil changes, washer fluid, new tires, etc....

I also worked the “full service” pumps. These were a set of pumps where people could pay a little more per gallon and I would pump their gas, clean their windows, check their oil and check their tire pressures if necessary. I would check anything they asked for. And now and then, I even got a tip.

I met some odd and sometimes lewd folks in those days (1980s) doing that job. I got the best tips on the coldest and wettest days and some times late at night.

Ahhh. The good ol days. LMAO!

I’m so old I remember when the attendant pumped gas, checked fluid levels, put air in the tires AND gave you a set of glasses with a fill-up!

First self-serv pump was in 1947. Oregon finally arrives at the year 1947. Congratulations!

We’ve been doing it since the phony gas “crisis” of the 1970’s. Do they expect their nanny state to do it for them?

Let me guess... Fields?

The locals there let me pump my own gas once because they were busy doing something else.

Neat place. And as remote as you can get in the Lower 48.

People are pretty helpless. At the rate we’re going, my grandchildren will be able to take over the country armed with nothing more than some harsh language and a butter knife.

The idea that someone can NOT pump their own gas is insane.

I know that. But what does that have to do with my comment?

Until recently, people in Oregon were “never” allowed to smoke marijuana, either.

“There people are unbelievable”.

Can you imagine how they would melt down in some type emergency?

The scariest part of a bad situation are the idiots.

There was (or is?) some benzene (I believe, according to my Engineer Chemistry professor, former GM engineer) which was labeled a carcinogen hence the “carcinogenic” statements.

It’s usually easy enough to stay upwind of the fumes - I do it just out of habit now. Now this data was from 30 years ago admittedly. I don’t know if it has changed so if anyone knows, thanks in advance.
