The last two times we traveled out of Oregon, our card was compromised at unattended gas pumps.
That seems to be quite a high rate of occurrence. Considering I've been using cards at least twice a week (two vehicles) for 30 years without a single occurrence, your rate of occurrence may want you to take a look at why you think that occurred.

I know it seems strange, but we are quite sure about it being gas station skimmers because that’s the only thing purchased on trips to visit family eight hours away. One stop for gas and we pack lunch.
I was mad as hell the 2nd time because we tug on the card slot to check after the first time it happened. We also save our receipts so I filed a police report with a photo of the receipt with the pump # (you can do all this with your phone!). They removed the skimmer, but unless they catch someone in the act of attaching it, they have no way of catching them. They are wireless now and transmit the card info remotely.
We pay cash now.
