Republican wins Virginia seat that ended in a tie

Republican David Yancey will keep his seat in the Virginia House of Delegates after a state official pulled his name out of a bowl Thursday, deciding a contest that ended in a tie in November.

Yancey and Democrat Shelly Simonds each received 11,608 votes in their Newport News-based district. Initial results showed Yancey leading by just ten votes. A recount gave Simonds a one-vote edge. But Republicans challenged a single ballot, resulting in a tie.

Democrats sued to overturn the challenge, but on Wednesday a three-judge panel rejected their complaint. That led to Thursday’s drawing, in Richmond, out of a special bowl crafted by the resident potter at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Yancey would be the 51st Republican in the 100-member House of Delegates. Before November’s elections, Republicans held 66 seats. But Democrats put up a surprisingly strong showing, netting 15 Republican-held seats — and coming within a single vote of claiming a tie.

Virginia state law allows the loser of the draw to request a second recount. Simonds said Wednesday she would not request a second recount if she lost the drawing. Yancey declined to make the same pledge.

She already pledged not to call for a recount if she lost the drawing.

She’s out.

Nobody in VA should pat themselves on the back too hard over this...

Amen. Granted, VA has a very strong blue influence due to its proximity to the Swamp. But it's still a southern state. The Repubs need more turnout in the non-Swamp areas of the state.

You expect a Democrat to keep their word?

Oh that is so cute...

This was unnecessary. All that had to do was remove all the illegal alien votes from the Dem and the GOP wins.

Agreed. They go from a solid Republican majority to depending on the luck-of-the-draw to keep a one-seat control of the legislature.

I think that would be Alexandria and Arlington County. I think a lot of the executive branch should be moved out of the Washington, DC area. For example, the Department of Commerce could be moved to Detroit. It would help the unemployment in Detroit and remove some democratic votes from Virginia (Detroit is already 100% democrat already).

That would help. I certainly would not be sad to see those people leave the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth.

It won’t happen, but it’s fun to think about it.

“Maybe Va. needs to give back the part of D.C. they originally gave for the district?”

Virginia donated land for the District in 1791.
The government decided not to build on both sides of the Potomac and returned the donated land to Virginia in 1846.

We have again been invaded by malevolent yankees.
Only this time they came to stay.

Well, we taught the Virginia GOP a LESSON - they run an Establishment guy, we give the state to the Democrats!!!f

Doesn’t feel good? And, of course, the national GOP paid us back for doing such a great thing in return by handing the Alabama Senate set to the Democrats.

But who cares - I live for PRINCIPLE - and if that means handing Democrat power, then SO BE IT.

...but somehow I have trouble calling that ‘winning’.

Challenge was done before the drawing, it was struck down.
