People Openly Promoting Murder Of Police In Florida

The Clay County Sheriff's Office said that there's nothing they can do.

Orange Park, FL - Attention is being drawn to an unknown man or men who have been holding "Kill A Cop" signs in Orange Park.

The signs are being held by the men near schools, and one witness is concerned, according to WJAX.

Janice Gibson said she saw the man with the sign at the corner of Moody Avenue and Filmore Street on Monday, Dec. 18, and she took photos of the man.

“People need to know about this. Its in my back yard. To me that’s not freedom of speech. That’s like a terrorism, Gibson said.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said this has been going on for two years and that multiple people have been spotted holding the sign.

Dale Carson, law and safety expert for WJAX, said law enforcement has limited options because speech is protected by the First Amendment.

In evaluating whether the threats against police rise to the level of criminal charges, prosecutors look for specificity that would make a threat legitimate rather than general, according to Ken Paulson, First Amendment specialist.

"For something to be a true threat, it has to be clearly targeted and imminent so that someone learning of the threat would be reasonably concerned for their safety," Paulson said.

In 2016, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's office in Michigan warned citizens after Detroit police officers received online threats that although freedom of speech is protected, direct threats against another individual, group, or location are not protected, according to The Washington Times.

“Once threatening speech is directed toward a specific person; a group of people, including law enforcement agencies or ethnic communities; or specific locations in a community, it can be viewed as a credible threat. Individuals who communicate threats may be subject to prosecution," according to the joint statement issued by the FBI and the Michigan U.S. Attorney's Office.

Do you think that these signs are protected speech? Or is this making criminal threats? We'd like to hear from you. Please let us know in the comments.

law enforcement has limited options because speech is protected by the First Amendment.

Threats against the public order are not protected speech, and never have been until the late 20th century. Only the imaginative Justice Brennan and his judicial spawn took it upon themselves to protect things like public obscenity and explicit incitements to violent crime.

Well, surely it’s not as dangerous as praying on the sidewalk in front of an abortion center or praying at a public high school. < /sarcasm in case anyone wasn’t sure >

Go out and hold up a sign reading “Kill a Muslim” and see what happens.

...law enforcement has limited options because speech is protected by the First Amendment.

If this were happening in my area I think I'd keep a sign in my car. Then if I came across this guy I'd legally park, then stand next to him with my sign. My sign would say "Kill this a**hole" with an arrow...

Wonder how he'd feel about that? My free speech too.

As pointed out by a comment below the story, would a person be arrested for carrying a sign saying “Kill a Black?”

Object lesson time. If the guy held up a sign that said “Kill The News Media”, do you think the press would feel non-threatened and respect his freedom of speech as they appear to do with this story? How about “Kill The Lawyers”?

About 750k state and local sworn LE in the US, add in Federal LE, about 800k. 128 killed last year, including 44 shot. 987 people shot by police in 2017. 323.1 million people in the US per the Census Bureau. Normalized, .0055% to 2.98e10^-4% of each respective group shot and killed. Per the data compiled by the Washington Post, 213 of those shot were unarmed, not that armed or unarmed really matters without additional circumstances being in play, but the fact remains that police are in much more danger, and are shot and killed at a much higher rate than non-LE.

I kinda think more people should consider the numbers before buying into the leftwing media scam that police shootings are a problem in America. Considering all the thugs, organized crime, illegals, crazies, druggies, etc., police are showing remarkable restraint in the vast, vast majority of cases.

I wonder if the reason for NOT going after the sign holders because of lack of specificity would hold up if someone repeatedly held up a sign that said, “KILL A OBAMA” or “KILL A CLINTON”....That’s not specific so it should be acceptable..

“You can’t arrest him just for holding the sign. But there’s no reason you can’t stand next to him with a sign that says “Kill a douchebag” and has an arrow pointing in his general direction. The same freedom of speech that protects him also protects him. And makes him a laughingstock.”

True but the cops always have the catchall of disturbing the peace. They can make an arrest on those terms and see how it plays out.

“If you were a cop these days, you wouldn’t need any reason at all to murder him. “He reached for his waistband” is all that’s required.”

Or in these cases when they cup their package.

“I kinda think maybe cops should stop murdering unarmed Americans. “

At the rate the cops are going we are going to start seeing these signs in more affluent white neighborhoods too.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that one of those forms of speech that is not protected by the first amendment?

Do we not have a rule of law in the US?

You can’t arrest him unless he himself threatens to kill cops.

I disagree. One form of speech that is NOT protected is the act of inciting others to do violence to others. It’s illegal.

Why not? Cops are even killing people all the time....for far less..for nothing.

I’ve said for two decades that there are only three types of people that become cops these days:
1. Those that will take any job they can get
2. Thugs - typically high school jocks that couldn’t find anything else and like the power it brings.
3. Young and ignorant that honestly think they can make a difference.

Number three will eventually get weeded out.
