Community upset after HOA tells them to leave garage doors open or face $200 fine

AUBURN, Calif. (WCMH) – Members of a California community are upset after their homeowners’ association told them they need to keep their garage doors open during the day.

A list left with homeowners in the Auburn Greens subdivision is giving many residents a cause for concern. It mandates leaving garage doors up from 8 a.m. through 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, KTXL reported.

Residents who fail to keep their garage door up face a $200 fine and an administrative hearing.

“I have nothing to hide. I understand that somebody had someone living in the garage. I don’t,” said Shelly Ia. “I am following the rules. All I am asking is a reasonable way of going around this. If you want to do a monthly, bi-monthly inspection of my garage, I have nothing to hide. If I have something stored in there and you don’t like it, I’ll remove it.”

Before I retired to Florida, I lived in a townhouse in a small 51 home neighborhood in Arizona.

A few years ago, one homeowner made it a habit of leaving their garage door open all of the time, 24/7.

The HOA sent out a revision to their rules that said everybody had to leave their garage door closed when it wasn't in use.

Open garage doors invited thieves and looked unsightly, they said. The latter is why they wanted them closed, even though the first reason was valid.

HOAs: You're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I think he may be conflating the use of HOAs in Florida needed for the management of retention ponds in developments. Yes that is a law. Once the developer is done with selling all the properties, he has no more responsibility for the management of the ponds aka drainage ditches.

Looters will soon be descending on Auburn Greens. And under the recently-passed Propositions 47 and 57, which ease penalties on “property crimes,” they won’t be going to jail if caught, and they know it.

define “open”. I would allow the garage door to be “opened”

One could move all the tools and lawnmower into the bedroom, and move a bedroom bed, bureau, night stand and lamp into the garage. Oh, and make sure the bed is not made.

And then leave garage wide open.

Reminds me of the 70s Woody Allen satire about a revolutionary government taking over a Central American country and the new dictator announces that henceforth all persons will wear their underwear on the outside to enable the authorities to tell if people are actually changing their underwear.

The only answer to the HOA is it they don't like it, @#$^& them. Why anyone would move into an HOA is crazy. They're nothing but a bunch of little Mrs. Karvitz Nazi bullies. Move to the country and be relatively free from dictators.

This sounds like the typical dumbass approach I suffer at my work. One individual screws up and everyone is punished, or lectured.

That wouldn’t work in my neighborhood. The development across the street has “RV” garages... but nobody is actually using them as garages. They are man caves, auto shops, anything but RV parking. Thieves would take everything not nailed down.

There's a reason why I call HOA enforcers 'Neighborhood Nazis'.

If they didn’t turn the whole damn state into a sanctuary for illegals maybe they wouldn’t have to worry about invaders living in garages.

“.... the HOA answer is to make everyone keep their garage doors open during the day.”.....

As soon as those so-inclined break into someone’s house via the garage, the home owners should sue the city.

Law suit pending in....5...4...3...2...?

I have little sympathy for those who willingly & knowingly cede control of their lives & property to HOAs. You opted for less freedom. Well, here you go.

The city has nothing to do with it.

Ours went to an HOA to build a road and then they tried to grab more power. Funny, they failed so the HOA was no more. A few years later, some CA imports tried to start it up again and I gave them a royal dressing down.

BTW, the HOA never got the road built so we homeowners built it to county specs and turned it over to the county for upkeep.

Hush!!! we have lived here over 20 years. No HOA.
However, the landscape changed and now we have younger families moving in. They squawk over every little thing, a dog barks, a loud plane overhead. Apparently everything revolves around their babies naps. One wants speed bumps in the neighborhood to make everybody slow down!
Some are making noises about an HOA and yeah, we’re not interested. I will move 1st!!!

The video in the link shows a neighborhood of multi-family units. A lot of security screens and bars on the windows. Just a guess, but these “sombody-s” living in garages are probably not US citizens.

I hate HOA’s. Bunch of busybodies with time on their hands.

No, no, no! You just don't understand. HOA board members are just Democrat legislators, city council members, etc. In TRAINING!

"If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. " 1 Peter 4:14-15

"Murders, thieves, evil doers" ... and "busybody". Interesting association for these busybodies!
