Yea.. in 1955 the football helmet was NOT leather but the face mask In the middle of the season - was a bar across the nose.
My Baseball LL (50-51) helmet was two pieces of plastic over the ear and two strips of elastic to hold them together. Think the whole team had 3 of them.
I set pins in a bowling alley at 14- double alley, double shift, 5 nights a week and some weekends.that was with the PEGS in the floor..
Only nights off were Fri in basketball season.
All football and baseball games were in the afternoon.
And I was ‘hard on my kids (2 Ds)’ and my grandkids have a hard life....
‘Cry Me a River’.....
Thanks for posting.
Thoughts
1. A lot of this is people having one or two kids. They put all their hopes for future into kids. Makes parents more risk adverse. Gentically the morons having 5, 6, 21 kids are more successful in Darwinian terms.
2. Media. With Amber Alerts and media showing the risks out there parens are hyped into being overprotective. Fear sells. “Something can kill you. Watch news at 10 to find out what!” We’re also a post-Christian society now. More danger out there.
3. Lawsuits have been mentioned. Parents are likely to blame anyone but their own kid. Schools and municipalities take away anything that might lead to someone suing. Insurance companies also tell them what to avoid.
4. Psychologically we’re creating kids that deem being offended as equivalent to physical violence. That’s a danger to free speech and to education.
There’s also a certain power in being offended. These folks can get people fired or make them walk on eggshells just from making allegations.
Good article. The current crop of college students seem more conservative then the 90s/00 kids.
I hear you. Those were the good/tough old days.
