It just means they would rather continue than not continue, a choice.

Denial is the problem if one has to stoned to feel good they missing something and they have to deal with it.
I lived with two people were addicted. If they had been using alcohol like that, you would have called them a hardened alcoholic. They were high from the time they woke up until they went to bed. There were no breaks unless the supply dried up and then they were basket cases.
