Why is it that the wealthy often become liberals?

Wealth and power insulate people from the damage done by liberalism. The elites in their gated communities don't have to deal first-hand with the downside consequences of liberal policies.

This is especially true on the immigration issue. As far as the elites are concerned, mass immigration allows them to find a guy to mow their lawn or a girl to clean their house for less than an American. It's the rest of us that have to deal with the crime, poverty, and social decay that result from third world immigration. Similarly, the jobs of CEOs (like those of politicians and media talking heads) are secure - they'll never to outsourced to an Indian call center or replaced by a cheaper guest workers.

For one, because many of them don't work with their minds to solve physical problems or with their hands to build or repair things. That's also increasingly true about people of lower income levels in a throwaway economy of import recipients.

To clarify in a more general sense, they’re more out of touch with physical realities. Money is “earned” in rather abstract ways. Earning becomes a game that includes lobbies for receiving and keeping more money that would otherwise go to other special interests.
