WASHINGTON Once considered a long shot among a dozen or more potential running mates for Al Gore, Sen. Richard Durbin has emerged as one of a few serious contenders, Democratic strategists say.
Sen. Durbin confirms meeting once and talking twice by telephone in recent weeks with former Secretary of State Warren Christopher, who is conducting the vice-presidential search process for the Gore campaign.
"Is he on the list? Yes," says a senior Democratic Party official from the Midwest with close ties to the campaign. "Is he strong? Absolutely."
While he once laughed off the veepstakes speculation, Sen. Durbin now frets about possibly having to make the biggest decision of his career.

Durbin lied about “$hit hole”. He is not supported by anyone there. Apparently ,it was $hit house— a clear PLACE — not a race. Trump just keeps whipping their asses!!
Is Al Gore planning to run for President?
Little Dickie Dirtbin is doing enough damage as a US Senator. What a catastrophe it would have been had Gore won and he was in Joe Lieberman’s place instead. Oh well it didn’t happen. Thank goodness for that!
Article date is in 2000.
Probably. Every Democrat will run in 2020.
A Gore-Durbin 2000 ticket would have won though. Bush was too weak.
Having missed the original date of article (2000), the damned post almost put me into cardiac arrest!!
Oh, thanks. I guess that it was kind of on my mind because Gov Inslee of WA wants to run and he mentioned that he had had a call from Al Gore after he announced his cap and tax plan.
Oh, this could be good... how embarrassed the Dems will be when witnesses and victims of his violent and very racist high school “n_____r polo” games come forward.
Might explain why the Gore thing didn’t work out.
