In the good old days, places like Juarez and Havana were wide open for gringos. Acapulco. You could blow off a little steam. If you had the dinero.

El Paso is not the only area where a fence has proven effective:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2017/08/22/homeland-security-secretary-border-walls-work-yuma-sector-proves-it-elaine-duke-column/586853001/

https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5323928

The thing to remember is even with a secure fence/wall/barrier there has to be patrols to go with it to keep it effective. In areas where there have been all the breaches that libs love to talk about the fence was built and not effectively patrolled. In those areas even if a breach is discovered, if there are not agents in the area to apprehend the illegal crossers or stop someone with a torch- then of course it looks ineffective.

We have to be realistic about that, we cannot just build a wall and then expect it to be the only line of defense, it will have to be patrolled. I think it would take less agents to patrol a designated barrier on the actual border than it takes now trying to chase smugglers and illegals all over the desert up to and over 50 miles away from the border. We must stop them at the border, not try to catch them after they have made it into the country. BP was chasing a smuggler or smugglers in our area last night...running up and down the road, North- South...ATV agents out in the desert. Just seems it would be more effective to have an actual barrier on the border and patrol it.

When I was a kid growing up the BP and Customs (Customs had patrol officers CPOs at the time) did patrol the actual border and it was quite effective even though there was no real fence in those days. When Carter was president for some odd reason the Customs Patrol Officers were pretty much done away with- and they were done away with on the border- other than working at the actual Ports of Entry. Border Patrol was also pulled away from the border and the claim was they would be more effective patrolling major roads in the border area. In my area that means remote state highways and Interstate 10. What a joke- by the time the illegal traffic gets to the Interstate it is unlikely they will be caught.

There have always been open border schmucks here, but I notice there is no where near as many as there once were...

Yup. Kinda like knee-jerk police support and the 'war on drugs'. It would seem that a lot of folks have been mugged by reality.

One thing nice about El Paso is that from a safe place you have a nice view of the sh!thole across the border.

It is because the illegals disperse into the rest of the country as quickly as they can. No time for crime when on the move.

I am pretty familiar with Beto. He is of course a died in the wool hard core liberal who tries hard to convince people he represents all of them. He is very good to get involved in the issues; say what people want to hear, make totally unrealistic promises...he actually does very little. Most in ELP just love him, “he is such a good man and he cares so much” they don’t notice he doesn’t deliver.

Beto goes to every dog fight- if an issue is hot enough to gather 50 people he is there. Whatever he says this week he may not say the same next week. In this article he was saying exactly whatever it took for his quote to get printed. That is how he operates. He is all about getting his name out there because he plans to go far in politics. He does bear watching because he does seem to have charisma...

There are many that don’t want the wall for different reasons...I think we MUST have a wall, we have to have a serious designated border the whole length of the border. I know they have a river to deal with in Texas and a wall may not work there or in all areas but there still has to be a serious line- this is it no doubt about it. And it must be patrolled and secured. The security of our country depends on it.

I also think Mexico will pay for it. There are many ways to accomplish that- they don’t have to agree- or want to. Of course we will have to pay in the beginning but it really is simple to get the money back. Mexicans entering legally at the Ports of Entry- many of them need a permit to enter; an I-94. I think we now charge them $6 just bump it up to $10...easy to do and would make the crossing wait times shorter because inspectors would have to make less change for the permits. Apply the extra $4 for each permit issued to reimburse for the wall. As many had said we can also charge a fee on money transferred out. There many ways for the cost of the wall to be paid back in no time.

Good point and that may well be an element. Being on the border, El Paso is teeming with immigration officers. If I were Illegal, I’d get out of dodge as quickly as possible too.

The Hispanics who are the vast majority of the population probably date back generations in the US, and therefore a damn decent bunch.
