Government shutdown: NFL playoffs won't be televised for military personnel overseas
CBS ^ | Jan 20, 2018 | John Breech

It's not going to be easy for any military members overseas to watch the NFL playoffs on TV on Sunday. One alternative: watching the AFC Championship Game between the Patriots and Jaguars right here on CBSSports.com. Due to the government shutdown, the Pentagon has announced that the American Forces Network (AFN) won't be active until things are back up and running again in Washington DC. The AFN is the easiest way for soldiers to stay on top of American entertainment when they're deployed outside the country, but it's funded by the government, which is why it's down right now.

AFN regularly shows NFL playoff games; however, with the network currently offline, Eagles, Vikings, Patriots and Jaguars fans deployed overseas won't be able to watch the the AFC Championship or NFC Championship on the network on Sunday, and that's likely not going to change unless the shutdown somehow ends over the next 24 hours.

Why would they want to watch a bunch of feral scum who disrespect the flag?

They should be able to stream it on the internet anyway. Provided they have internet access.

Kneelers have curtailed our eating out at several establishments as that is all that is on their TV’s. Nor is it on at home and hubby is a sports nut. He’s now down to Nascar, tennis, and golf. Thankfully lots of Car auction/restoration shows on.

Hubby is 20 yr career Navy Retired SCPO.

There are a number of websites that you can view sporting events for free, and I’m quite sure our young men and women in the services know about them.

I challenge you to go online and find a streaming service that carries these games. At least one that does not cost hundreds of dollars.

Congressional aides, secetaries, pages, should all be furlouged today. Congress’ pay checks suspended until they do their jobs, not that they actually work, that is for aides and Lobbyist are for.

The NFL clamps down on the playoffs very tightly.

I suggest you take ten seconds and find a “streaming” service providing NFL playoffs for free.

They don’t exist.

Our leftest bureaucrats in the Federal government will make this as painful as possible. It’s what they do.

If I were serving overseas I wouldn’t be upset by this. The way our military has been disrespected by these a-holes. I’d rather watch Leave it to Beaver reruns.

Actually I was incorrect. Hulu has the games. I am not sure if you can get them overseas.

As one who has been there before, this will be detrimental to morale.

The internet can probably bypass the problem depending on national governments and their understandings with the US military. My guess is no internet problems, but you never know.

Nobody said the streaming was *free*. At least not legal streaming; there are literally dozens of sites that will stream NFL games illegally and free.

However, the fact remains that NFL games *are* legally streamed and therefore available even with AFN shut down.

This is not good and Trump should sign an EO saying that AFN can continue. I think this will not go well overseas. It is cheap to run AFN compared to the entire budget. This is the “closed monuments” on Obama’s government closure. Trump needs to fix this ASAP.

20 years to the day, I went to Navy Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes. My recruiter promised me that they will let the recruits watch the Super Bowl. It was the only thing that he lied about.

What’s a Tom Brady? I don’t care a flying fig about him or the self absorbed NFL.

As if they can’t pick the game up on the internet.

Agreed. Whether or not all the troops like the NFL, IMHO those who are serving in the crummy places we send them to deserve the opportunity to watch and be entertained for awhile if they wish while off duty.
