Senate Democrats say they are accepting a deal with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for an immigration vote, clearing the way for passage of a bill to reopen the federal government.
McConnell, early Monday, promised to take up an immigration bill that would protect an estimated 800,000 "Dreamers" from deportation, under an open amendment process, if Democrats would agree to end the government shutdown.
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y) said that pledge was enough for his caucus to accept a three-week government funding bill, which is now set to pass at noon.
"After several discussions, offers and counteroffers, the Republican leader and I have come to an arrangement. We will vote today to reopen the government to continue negotiating a global agreement," Schumer said.
Schumer said McConnell has committed that if negotiators fail to reach an immigration deal before the stopgap spending measure expires on Feb. 8 the Senate will immediately proceed to consideration of legislation to protect "Dreamers."
He said McConnell has promised that immigration debate will be neutral and fair to all sides.
Now there is a real pathway to get a bill on the floor and through the Senate. It is a good solution, and I will vote for it, Schumer said.
The agreement likely ends a three-day government shutdown that began at 12:01 a.m. Saturday after Democrats voted to block a monthlong House-passed stopgap that extended funding for the Childrens Health Insurance Program but did nothing to protect immigrants who came to the country illegally at a young age facing deportation.
Democrats held a 90-minute meeting before the vote on whether to accept McConnells offer.
Many of them worried that it fell short of their demands to reach a deal to replace the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program with President Trump or at least a promise from Republicans to pass immigration legislation to a must-pass bill.
Schumer said he has not spoken to President Trump since a meeting at the White House on Friday.
DEVELOPING ...
An open amendment process would produce a huge amnesty and none of what Trump wants in the Senate. The Dems would vote as a block and they’d have Graham and Flake to give them whatever they want. They Dems would effectively be in control of the whole thing.
NO DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO MORE CONTINUING RESOLUTIONS!!!!!!
NO MORE RAISING THE DEBT CEILING!!!!!
NO MORE 30 DAY ‘SOLUTIONS’!!!!!!
DO THE JOB YOU WERE SENT THERE TO DO.
MOVE OR ELIMINATE ALL NON ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEES.
I, personally, would NOT want to be in a job or position where I was considered non essential and I certainly wouldn’t KNOWINGLY hire ANYONE that was not essential to the day to day operations of my company.
Lets put MORE of President Donald Trump work ethics and business experience in use here.
HOWEVER, the more successful PDT is the closer we get to the D’s (FINALLY) going after the McNamara appointment as a DISASTER, economically and politically.
Remember R McNamara was JFKs ‘solution’ to the Military/Industrial Complex ‘problem’ pointed out by DDE...
” The Goodlatte Bill does that - provides legalization, but NO Citizenship expect thru ‘Current Process,’ (go back to your country, apply, etc)...I’m OK if that’s the deal ... “
Still need to fix Chain Migration - that’s the elephant in the living room that will destroy this country if left unchecked. If that’s fixed, then I agree with you.
I foresee a Lucy/Charlie Brown football meme with Trump’s head in place of Lucy appearing shortly.
That’s what Trump wanted....DACA as a separate item....as it should be.
I tend to agree with you. The 800,000 illegals are not going to be deported, and we all know this. We also know that if we do not demand serious immigration reforms - along the lines of what you suggest - it will never pass as an independent piece of legislation, as it will never get 60 votes on its own.
I would add an end to sanctuary cities/states to your list.
Yes they did, and a few with a little sense finally got it through Chuckies thick skull and some others.
Trust Trump ... he will not cave on Amnesty. Even Rush just said the RATs lost - they thought the GOP would cave.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Yup - what you said.
This was (IMO) a quick “cave” by the Dems .... the optics for them were terrible. Several DEM polls came out showing they were getting the blame for the shutdown. Schumer tried in vain to rename the Schumer Shutdown the Trump Shutdown. Initially, I thought the Dems wanted this hanging over Trump’s head at the SOTU, but it quickly became apparent it was not going to be hanging over Trump’s head, but theirs & Trump would have absolutely “destroyed” them in a SOTU speech - he has the ‘politically incorrect’ balls to do it & the Dems are evidently now ‘believers’ that he would.
What about processing the judicial confirmation backlog?
It will take far less effort to process a few hundred future judges than 800,000+ aliens.
He will then compare their horrific plight to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s.
Incremental-ism happens when you give a Democrat an inch.
We can still create the environment so that they self-deport.
Much of this unfortunate situation is the belief on the part of Democrat leadership they own the political dialogue due their ownership of the news media. They haven’t come to terms with the fact social media has advanced, and this President is getting the truth out to the populace in spite of the Democrat controlled MSM.
I loathe they whom encourage this President to discontinue the Tweets. That is his means of getting around the MSM, and their intent to deceive the American people with their diabolical fabrications.
Personally want to see this President Tweet even more.
Exactly. A clean bill.
Trump always wanted to take up the DACA issue later and deal with it legislatively, as it should be. Remember, almost all of this problem stems from an Obama EO and has never been legislated and is not codified law.
I think Trump will veto anything that screws US again.
No wall, no end to lottery and chain visas, will get vetoed.
Perhaps you can give us Weds lottery numbers while you’re at it.
Only if strictly limited to those 700,000 already enrolled.
As currently written, it expands the numbers greatly.
Well said, RQSR.
President Trump wouldn’t have a need to Tweet if we had a fair media, unfortunately we don’t and probably won’t for the foreseeable future.

If they are going home voluntarily and getting in line like everyone else, why `legalize’ them?
Once they are legalized/given amnesty, it’s game over.
Flake, Corker, Hatch, Heller, Alexander, Graham, McCain, Murkowsky, Hoeven, Rubio, Tillis, Burr, Lankford, Gardner, Cornyn, Cochran, Collins, Sasse, Kennedy, Shelby, Ernst and Blunt are all are in favor of amnesty.
Nothing good will come out of this Senate.
