Check the barrio some time. We have them in Virginia and I visited some in CA. They have units with one owner or legal renter and a dozen illegals. They obviously do not want a bank account with 0.001% interest, not even Americans want those. The rose colored scenarios of self-deportation are mainly pipe dreams. Scenarios of mass deportation are unrealistic to say the least. The best we can do is the incremental deportation currently underway plus the incentives, but being realistic about the effectiveness of those.

But the big question I have is why citizenship? Why offer anything beyond permanent resident alien status?

Correct, however this is far from being done-and-dusted. Again, dems play the long-game well just by the sheer amount of illegals that arrived/Hispanics demographic that vote democrat since 1986. The anchor is monetary welfare from various means Fed/State. That is where the Center of Gravity lies with all of this. Destroy that, you win. Unfortunately too many citizens and interests groups want that gravy train to keep rolling. Hence, the dems key to power regardless of what “conditions” they promote and concessions they fail to yield to.
