An statement from an unnamed FBI official to the New York Times and Washington/CIA Post is not an "FBI statement" by any objective definition of the term.
One of the reader comments on the WP article about this story was a classic:
"This 'FBI statement' was probably released to the Washington Post by Whitey Bulger and John Connolly -- from prison."
