Trump Is Right. It’s Time to Give Agency Heads More Discretion With Employees.

Among the many sensible proposals President Donald Trump called for during his first State of the Union address, one certainly deserves more attention than it has received.

Tuesday, before a joint session of Congress, Trump said:

All Americans deserve accountability and respect—and that is what we are giving them. So tonight, I call on the Congress to empower every Cabinet secretary with the authority to reward good workers—and to remove federal employees who undermine the public trust or fail the American people. . . snip

Very good discussion of why President Trump's request during the SOTU address merits action by Congress.

Enjoy the read.

More discretion? Sure, give AG Sessions right to fire anyone and everyone. Then, give him instructions to do exactly that. If you can’t clean up DOJ and FBI might as well give it up. He’s got people here scheming to undermine the president, even opening, like Boyd. Why is the guy still there?!

This line from the speech got my attention. A green light to clear out dead wood and troublemakers.

Is the issue the union, or civil service rules? I suspect it is more the latter.

In either case, both will stiffen those department heads seeking to clean house. Can foresee a lot of early retirements perhaps...

I couldn’t imagine working for the government, since so many hires are affirmative action faux-middle class tokens. Good luck getting rid of bad workers; some demographics would have 90%+ unemployment rates.

Yeah - might be noted that the Fed Employees Union is not nearly as robust as it used to be - pretty much withered and died on Keesler AFB a decade ago and Keesler has a LOT of civilian employees - most of us never joined and they stopped being effective keeping bad employees employed - I managed to fire two and saw two others fired from my unit....still a unwieldy process though - took 9 and 6 months respectively for the ones I got rid of.

1. If Obama or Clinton’s Agency Heads had had increased power in this reqard, what would the Federal Civil Service look like?

2. For this to come close to working we have to have Agency Heads who have their heads screwed on right instead of screwed up.

“A green light to clear out dead wood and troublemakers.”

Troublemakers like Republicans and Conservatives under a Democratic Administration?

Troublemakers like those who say what management needs to hear instead of what it wants to hear?

Amazing. So to guard against poor management, we’ll have none at all?

No. We need to guard against misuse of management discretion to get rid of people they regard as troublesome.
