So does that mean we can please send the 20 million-plus low-skill illegals home?

It’s retail. You are supposed to want a better job.

Sure, can’t provide for every eventuality but it would be enough to program a robot doing stock replenishment as an example to call for help if anything prevents it from doing it’s job.

We hope to move South at some point, but - one negative - we've noticed that Publix has quite a monopoly in states like Florida and parts of Georgia.

Here in the northeast, we have many, many chain supermarkets and smaller chain and family-owned grocery stores to choose from. I will *really* miss that variety when we do someday move.

Why is (from what I've seen) there mostly only Publix and Winn Dixie in Florida and GA?

I'm not knocking Publix, btw. Some Publix stores I've seen are GREAT, others are OK. I don't know much about Winn Dixie.

Don’t think so, they can’t be programmed to handle the unexpected. The only thing they can do is stop and signal for someone with an actual brain to handle the situation.

Well, that will eliminate most WalMart employees.

“Sure, can’t provide for every eventuality but it would be enough to program a robot doing stock replenishment as an example to call for help if anything prevents it from doing it’s job.”

What I’m thinking of is how most, if not all, of us have had fairly routine jobs where we’ve had to make adjustments. Nothing that required calling in the boss or supervisor, just using some on the spot common sense.

I think robots are fine for such things as moving big boxes from here to there - things that are not very complex with few, if any variables, to consider or factor in.

At any rate, that’s also my thinkin’ on driverless cars.

“Well, that will eliminate most WalMart employees.”

And most government-run school graduates.

Publix does not have a monopoly in the South. GA, NC and SC have some combination of the following:

Kroger
Harris Teeter (now owned by Kroger)
Piggly Wiggly
Whole Foods
Aldi
Lowe’s Foods
Food Lion
EarthFare
Sprouts
Fresh Market

Charlottesville, VA now has a Wegman’s.

Walmart has people working 24/7 to keep stores stocked. If you’ve seen the way stock gets delivered to stores, you’d know robots won’t be doing that anytime soon. Human intelligence is still needed for the disparity between how Bentonville thinks a store is laid out and the actual layout.

Packaging affects stocking due to constant changes. The recent move to thin cereal boxes is one. Walmart constantly changes shelf layouts (mods) that require a special crew to clean and rearrange shelving to implement the new plan.

Try stocking something when the mod hasn’t been accomplished and the computer data in Bentonville isn’t valid for location. That means the Telezon, looks like a raygun, is useless. The stocker has to eyeball the shelves until they find the correct location.

Add in the dislocation of stock by customers and you have another SNAFU human stockers handle with aplomb.

I had a boss who was Six Sigma. She was a good bureaucrat but absolutely hopeless for practical applications.

And she never let you forget she was Six Sigma.

I grew up in PA. Having been in the military and having visited numerous other relatives scattered around the states in the military I’ve been able to sample a lot of regional grocery stores. While I’m still fond of Giant Eagle, (”Iggle”) in my home state of PA, Louisiana-based Rouse’s is my hands down favorite. It is a meat lover’s wet dream and a vegan’s nightmare.

Publix is the southern equivalent of Wegmans.

As I understand it, the two have a non-compete agreement. Wegmans won't come south of Virginia and Publix won't come north of North Carolina.

I split my shopping between Walmart and Publix.
