Battling treacherous office chairs and aching backs, aging cops and firefighters miss...
LA Times ^ | 2/3/18 | Jack Dolan, Gus Garcia-Roberts and Ryan Menezes

When Capt. Tia Morris turned 50, after about three decades in the Los Angeles Police Department, she became eligible to retire with nearly 90% of her salary.

But like many cops and firefighters in her position, the decision to keep working was a financial no-brainer, thanks to a program that allowed her to nearly double her pay by keeping her salary while also collecting her pension.

A month after Morris entered the program, her husband, a detective, joined too. Their combined income for four years in the Deferred Retirement Option Plan was just shy of $2 million, city payroll records show.

But the city didn’t benefit much from the Morrises’ experience: They both filed claims for carpal tunnel syndrome and other cumulative ailments about halfway through the program. She spent nearly two years on disability and sick leave; he missed more than two years, according to a Times analysis of city payroll data. Morris pay chart

The couple spent at least some of their paid time off recovering at their condo in Cabo San Lucas and starting a family theater production company with their daughter, according to Tia Morris’ Facebook posts and her self-published autobiography. They declined to comment for this story.

The Morrises are far from alone. In fact, they’re among hundreds of Los Angeles police and firefighters who have turned the DROP program — which has doled out more than $1.6 billion in extra pension payments since its inception in 2002 — into an extended leave at nearly twice the pay, a Times investigation has found.

And they wonder why all these thousands of lucrative gold plated .gov pensions are choking off the CA private sector.

Wow. Now we know why cops’ & firefighters’ jobs are so dangerous - it’s the chairs. Definitely qualifies for hazardous duty pay.

Flipping grifters. Don’t care if they were good cops or firefighters. They are grifting pukes screwing over the taxpayers.

At the taxpayers expense, of course - taxpayers who do not get virtual retirement with double pay when they have a bad back, and who have to keep driving to work on potholed streets which can't be repaired because most of the tax revenue is being spent on luxurious government pensions.

It's all completely unsustainable, but hey - it gets the Democrats the government employee vote so it'll keep going until it crashes.

The most inept, greedy and monumentally costly criminal State (CA) legislature in our Country's history.

When will that cease?

That's entirely up to the non-public employee working taxpayers who is allowed to be robbed blind... for generations!

Check out the legislators' retirement picture.
It's worse than the cops' and firefighters'.

That sums it up. I'm constantly amazed that the blockheaded voters put up with scams like this. The public is so easily fooled. I think President Lincoln concluded that "You can fool most of the people most of the time."

And dollars to doughnuts, these greedy bastards vote Democrat and complain about greedy corporations that actually produce some goods and services. The world is cursed with Takers instead of Makers.

As a retired LEO I am ashamed of my fellow officers and firefighters. This a scam that should be stopped immediately. All in the program past and present should be forced to prove their disability. I can guarantee that most are bogus claims. I would send them to doctors out of state or least out of their immediate area for evaluations. I am truly ashamed.

I played ice hockey with a NY State Sheriff who was on medical leave for supposedly injuring his back during an on-the-job car pursuit and accident. He looked OK to me.

Don’t care if they were good cops or firefighters.

I doubt they ever were. Bad cops & firefighters are like broken guns: They don't work and you can't fire them.

Not that he might not be exaggerating his problem, but bad backs are funny things. I wouldn’t have known that until I developed a bad back problem myself from lifting things repetitively that were very heavy on one job I had for a few years. I have to have back support now when I’m sitting and sleeping, and I have to be very careful how I pick things up, too. But other than that, I can still do a lot of physical things normally.

It is simple end the program and they take retirement..

Civil service is a scam...

Like the Boston second in command becomes Fire Chief for a couple weeks and retires at hire benefits..

When I was a kid firefighters and cops were where you went when you could not find a real job..

allowed her to nearly double her pay by keeping her salary while also collecting her pension.

The cops have been running this racket for 1000 years. Remember this the next time you see them whining about how underpaid they are, which they do more than any other profession except for teachers.

The other scam with the cops is being able to drive their police cars to and from work. That is one hell of a perk that saves them thousands and thousands of dollars a year. They're only driving their own vehicles on weekends and vacations (and even that is grossly abused). People think it's just a savings on gas money. No, it's gas, oil, tires, not having your own windshield broke on the freeway, and every other expense with driving a car except for maybe insurance.

I’m sorry about that. It’s unfortunate that all the cops and firefighters who are doing this should be ashamed, but aren’t. While the good cops who wouldn’t dream of it shouldn’t be, but are.
