Sacramento Bee Leaks 19.5 Million California Voter Records, Promptly Compromised by Hackers

Last month, a local California newspaper left more than 19 million voter records exposed online. Gizmodo confirmed this week that the records were compromised during an apparent ransomware attack.

The Sacramento Bee said in a statement that a firewall protecting its database was not restored during routine maintenance last month, leaving the 19,501,258 voter files publicly accessible. Additionally, the names, home addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers of 52,873 Sacramento Bee subscribers were compromised.

“We take this incident seriously and have begun efforts to notify each of the individuals on the contact list and to provide them resources to help guard against potential misuse of their personal contact information,” the paper said in a statement. “We are also working with the Secretary of State’s office to share with them the details of this intrusion.”

The Kromtech Security Center first discovered the data on January 31st and reviewed records from several of the exposed databases before determining who owned the data. Kromtech reached out immediately to multiple employees in the Bee’s IT department but received no response.

Gizmodo was notified about the breach on February 2nd and reached out to an executive editor at the Bee. Our email was not returned. After emailing two other members of the Bee’s editorial board on Monday—including Gary Wortel, the paper’s president and publisher—Gizmodo was contacted by a public relations director at The McClatchy Company, the Bee’s owner.

A McClatchy spokesperson said the executive editor first contacted by Gizmodo had left the paper day our email was sent.

McClatchy provided an initial statement on Tuesday, saying it had “strict protocols in place to ensure the security of our data” and that it was “aware of a ransomware attack on one of our servers that was located outside our core IT structure.” The spokesperson added: “We know that in databases apparently targeted, no personally identifiable information, as defined by the State of California, was involved.”

Below is a sample of a leaked voter record, with personal information redacted. It contains the voter’s name, phone number, address, gender, date of birth, political affiliation, among other election-related details.

ANY person can go to ANY Calif county & purchase the voting records, listed by registration by party.

I helped a man running for County Commissioner years ago, and I went to the County & bought all the names of registered Republican voters for a mail out.

NOT a secret, but definately OBSTRUCTION by Calif Counties.

I would add if any harm or damage comes on to a single individual in this article and anytime there after.

Everyone involved meaning the Executives, the Editor, the writer, etc... will all be charged as accessories to a crime.

Send them that message and the rats will be in complete panic mode.

Last time I talked to an editor at a paper I pressed him to answer yes or no to the question, “Does your paper employ even a single Republican?”

He refused.

Of course it was intentional.

They are trying to do harm millions of Californians.

They know some loony leftist will try to hurt these people. At bare minimum it’s intimidation.

I hope their paper gets shut down and send the criminals responsible to San Quentin.

There is huge voter fraud in Ca. Promoted by the Democrats it is no wonder it is a one party state.

And now it will get worse with the new "Voter Choice Act" that just took effect. Choice means that you get to choose how many times you vote. They are going to mail every registered voter a ballot 4 weeks before the "June 5" election. Then you can vote early at your choice of any of 16 Vote Centers starting May 25 or at your choice of 78 Vote Centers starting June 2.

When you come to a Vote Center, you can ask for and get a replacement ballot. If you are a registered voter but have "changed your name or address or signature" you can fill out a new registration form right there - note that this is not a "change of registration" form but a new registration. So this makes it easy for unscrupulous people (sometimes known as "Democrats") to vote multiple times and register multiple times. To some extent the election authority can reconcile things and identify duplicate ballots but that already takes them many weeks these days for absentee and provisional ballots and this will get far worse under this scheme. So this opens the door wide to fraud.

Tellingly, the first sentence on the notification card I just got in the mail to announce these "Improvements in the upcoming June 2018 Election" says: "Sacramento County Elections Office is offering you more opportunities for voting with the VOTERS CHOICE ACT." Note that it's not more options but more opportunities.

“Typical California mess. I lived there 40 years, love the state as a place, but hate the politics with a passion.”

I left that sh*thole 20 years ago. If you can’t see the imminent imperious consequences, you can hire me as an interpreter to explain it to you.

Get out while you can to save your family.

Our local rag, the Anniston "RED" Star here in NE Alabama has been owned by the New York Slimes for years. The slimeball that owned it is still head editor of the rag, and brother I MEAN rag.

They actually call people and practically beg you to take their paper. They called me and offered a FREE month if I would take it. I told them I did not want it even IF it were free. My wife and I were out working the yard this past summer and a car pulled up in our drive way. The guy was from the rag and was driving house to house begging people to take the stinking RED Star. I told him I did not want it even if he did offer the free month and I had told his caller the same thing a while back. He was the head of the department that was trying to get readers. I told him as long as the bum that was running the paper, who was a MASSIVE obammy butt kisser by the way, was still there I would never take that paper. I told him I was not a supporter of the Dimocratcommie party and refused to put money in their pocket.

The guy who is editor and runs the RED Star has the last name of AYERS!!!! I don't think he is kin to the obammy Ayers bunch. Locals gave the "Red" name to the Anniston Star way, way, way back in the 1970's!!! That is how long this Ayers mob has run this paper. It is a dimocratcommie supporting rag. No one I know takes that paper.

I will go to Walmart on Saturday, and I pick it up and turn to the high school football section and read some of the game results and then put it back in the rack. Almost every day Ayers writes anti-republican, Christian, conservative, Trump, Bush, Reagan, anything good anti articles. Everything he wrote about obammy was like obammy WAS indeed the Dimocratcommie messiah!! That is how Ayers is. A messiah complex when it comes to obammy.

I simply don't know how it stays in business. I guess it is the Slimes pouring money in it is the only thing I can think of.

I’m sure it’ll be just fine. Liberals keep telling us there’s no voter fraud so I’m sure nothing bad will happen.
