There may be a very, very good reason Sessions' hands are off all this: even in normal communications within DOJ, no matter how tightly held, there are Cankles/Zero holdovers who were informing the traitors of every single move. THAT'S why it basically had to be offloaded to the IG. Sessions likely figured that there were leaks in his side that they hadn't identified yet (remember, this was one of Flynn's jobs and an early push was to purge all the leakers).
Leaks from anyone in DOJ would allow the Deep Staters to destroy evidence, cover their tracks. But they didn't know the IG investigation was going on the way it did.

I hope the IG is keeping a second set of books. Something tells me the moment he announces he’s completed his investigation the FBI is going to pay him a visit and confiscate all materials and pass out the threatening non-disclosure letters.
