American Spies Paid $100,000 to Russian Who Wanted to Sell Material on Trump
NY Times ^

After months of secret negotiations, a shadowy Russian bilked American spies out of $100,000 last year, promising to deliver stolen National Security Agency cyberweapons in a deal that he insisted would also include compromising material on President Trump, according to American and European intelligence officials.

The cash, delivered in a suitcase to a Berlin hotel room in September, was intended as the first installment of a $1 million payout, according to American officials, the Russian and communications reviewed by The New York Times. The theft of the secret hacking tools had been devastating to the N.S.A., and the agency was struggling to get a full inventory of what was missing.

Several American intelligence officials said they made clear that they did not want the Trump material from the Russian — who was suspected of having murky ties to Russian intelligence and to Eastern European cybercriminals. He claimed the information would link the president and his associates to Russia. But instead of providing the hacking tools, the Russian produced unverified and possibly fabricated information involving Mr. Trump and others, including bank records, emails and purported Russian intelligence data.

The United States intelligence officials said they cut off the deal because they were wary of being entangled in a Russian operation to create discord inside the American government. They were also fearful of political fallout in Washington if they were seen to be buying scurrilous information on the president.

Or maybe it is some of those people who paid to have Hitlery installed as President and got zip for that investment. They are trying to recover some of that money.

Yeah, did I miss something? It sure seems the dam is about to break if the NYT is covering stuff like this. I don’t see how this helps Democrats.

The NYT story is meant to sow discord between Trump and the intel community. This all happened with Trump in the WH. It helps the Dems indirectly because it creates the impression that the intel community believes the allegations in the Steele dossier and are trying to verify it still.

Trying to try their case in the court of public opinion won’t get them anywhere. Punish them.

Agreed, it is a clumsy attempt at “modified, limited hangout.”

If the intelligence community has this kind of money to subvert U.S. elections, then a great case can be made for sizeable cuts to their budgets!

Yes, it reads like a story one would use to cover one’s arse and keep one’s job if one got caught at work trying to buy smut.

Not to mention, anything that involved Cody Shearer is liable to be deep bullsheiss. Cody is one of the Sid Blumenthal related folks like the late Tyler Drumheller.

Tyler Drumheller was a pal of Joe Wilson. They were all intertined in the antisemitic group VIPs which is in turn related to the LaRouche nuts like Larry Johnson and Karen Kwietkowski, the latter a source who fed nonsense to the eager believer Ted Kennedy of all people, to bash Rumsfeld.

I hear Hillary’s pal Joe Wilson- whose NYTimes op ed got the Scooter Libby travesty rolling - I hear his allegedly super dooper deep cover spy wife, Valerie Plame, is writing spy novels now.
I’d not be surprised if she wrote this.

They put their house on the market a few months ago but none of the articles about it mentioned to where they were moving. they’re up to something no doubt.

The story also sounds like the stuff those Russian on air comedians fooled Schiff and Maxine Waters with...

It’s breathtaking and laughable that we call them “intelligence” agencies.

Psssst... hey buddy. A million bucks for the dirt on Trump. Tell ya what, 100k up front, then I’ll be back in an hour with the goods.

He never returns. Our “intelligence” agents are mystified about what went wrong. Hell, he could probably get another 100k outta them if he played his cards right. LOL

Maybe it’s an effort to incorporate ‘kompromat’ into the American language before people stop to wonder why their congresscritter Adam Schiff is so familiar with it he uses it lie a native.

At a small bar in the former heart of West Berlin, the Russian handed the American intermediary a thumb drive

As I was reading the part about a Berlin bar, this stupid song about a western town with dead end walls kept popping into my head...

One thing... whoever wrote it has been using Cody Shearer as a source since last year:

Reached by phone late last year, Mr. Shearer would say only that his work was “a big deal — you know what it is, and you shouldn’t be asking about it.”

This is so goofy I wonder if it's coded: He took a sip of the cranberry juice he was nursing, picked up his bag and said, “Thank you.” Then he walked out the door.

Really? Include a useless detail like what the guy was drinking? If "cranberry juice" isn't a code word, then it's an identifier. Or... the author is seriously OCD.
