Ben Carson, or the tale of the disappearing cabinet secretary.
Washington Post ^ | 2/11/2018 | Ben Terris

Carson is an acclaimed neurosurgeon who oversees a large government agency for which he has no particular qualifications and in this way represents the grand theme of the Trump administration. He, like the president, came to power by promising that an outsider would have the "common sense" it takes to cure what ails us.

And so, while conservative gadfly Armstrong Williams played host to this party at the Monocle restaurant, it was Carson everyone came to see.

"There's never been a time in the history of the world where a society became divided like this and did well," Carson said as a crowd — including an off-duty New York Times reporter, D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser, a slew of representatives from housing nonprofit organizations, and old friends from his presidential campaign — circled him. "And we don't really have a reason to be fighting each other. There was a movie some years ago, a Will Smith movie called 'Independence Day' . . ."

With his soothing, story-time cadences and heavy-lidded gaze, Carson proceeded to hold forth on how the earth's near-annihilation laid bare the superficiality of all the world's strife. If only, he argued, people realized the fate of humanity hung in the balance, then Palestinians and Jews, or even the United States and Russia, could be "like best friends."

Carson seems like a nice guy who wants to get a job done just like he did as a surgeon no doubt.

Great pick from a great President, Donald J. Trump.

From what I gather there are serious problems there and I sense that Sessions is a threat to President Trump among other things.

“it was Carson everyone came to see.”

Ben Carson is a beloved, and lovable person - especially among African-Americans.

That is why they needed to publish a hit piece on him - Trump is gaining among African Americans.

Just politics. It is almost all they do at WaPo, under the cover of news and journalism.

How is Ben Carson an “outsider”? His childhood was nothing like Obama’s. He didn’t have a pampered life, and wasn’t sent to private schools. He didn’t grow up in Granny’s house, with his every desire met. He grew up in Detroit, attended public school. His home life fell apart at five when it was discovered that his father had a prior family, and a wife he had never divorced. His parents separated not long after, and he grew up having to take on more responsibilities than any young boy should have to. And look where it took him.
I’d say he’s just as qualified to run the Department as any of the past Secretaries of HUD were.

Sec. Carson has been busy working with the various communities recently affected by hurricanes.

He was in Fayetteville NC meeting with community leaders on Friday.

Here he is touring a senior center damaged by Hurricane Matthew.

I worked in a mid-sized public bureacracy for 28 years, 14 in the bowels in Headquarters at a management level. I was consider creative, persistent and practical. It was like pulling water up hill to accomplish some of the things i did. Going through committees, specialist staff ( I in stalled a LAN in an agency that was totally mainframe and the IT staff just about had a heart attack.), directors staff, director and deputy directors, unions. Then outside the agency, the secretary’s office, the department of General Services, The department of finance, the assembly and senate budget committees and the governor’s blue pencil veto of something his office already approved.

My experience sold me on the concept of benign dictatorship.

Do we realize here yet that we are just doing a Rush Limbaugh by reading the enemy propaganda? He gets three hours a day and millions a year by just glorifying our enemy and mocking their words.

That is how to be an opposition forever.

I’d rather not be a green with envy opposition. I’d rather effing win.

I would like FR not to print or link to enemy propaganda and instead paraphrase or sum the enemy’s argument in their propaganda rag only if necessary, not quote it. Give people the title and date and that is it. It’s enemy propaganda and we shouldn’t get our nutrients from our enemies like Limbaugh does, and just sit around calling neener neener.

Ignore their crap and just post the truth with a short reference to how the rags lie. This site respects the enemy too much.

LieBerals are furious that Dr. Carson does not throw random hunks of money to Black Leaders in Big Urban Cities. Black Leaders need that money to keep their racist BLM groups working overtime.

Did not click to site. Just a guess though...so the MSM does not report on a conservative black man succeeding from the Trump administration, so that makes him disappearing???

Dr Carson likely is a force with prayer and has the entire WH under his responsibility for prayer and protection; I’d rather has “strong silent” than “loud stupid”.

I'm vastly more concerned about Sessions disappearing.

Ben disappeared after he revealed there was half a trillion dollars missing from HUD.

Ben Terris - blogger for Bezos' Political Hit Squad.

He was involved in the Michelle Fields hitpiece on Corey Lewandowski in 2016.

Enough said.

“... Agencies get important by growing the staff and the budget.”

Hints at author Terris’ central theses. Those of us who had to work with various agencies may have encountered them elsewhere:

1. No “outsider” can possibly learn enough to manage a single agency. The day-to-day realities of the job will bring him down to earth. Soon.

2. Each agency (nanny-state entitlement-disbursing agencies at any rate) has a mission so vital, so necessary, that it’s beyond good and evil. Which places it that much farther beyond the ken of the deplorables.

3. Therefore, the “administrative state” is immune, no matter what our outsider-president and his appointees intend or attempt.

Gen.Blather’s final sentence neatly sums up a bit of bureaucratic logic many Americans have not yet grasped:

Agencies are formed to accomplish specific tasks. But every one of them has to compete each year, for funding and status. Inevitably, they fall into competing with each other. Officially, they need more funds and bigger staffs to accomplish their mission better, but the reality is that bigger, more-lavishly-funded agencies improve their status in the hierarchy.

There is a truism I learned from a bright guy when i made manager. If we give you a million you will probably do some good work because there is more to do than what we can currently do. If you have to cut a million somehow you will do so and your department will survive and three years from now people will think the status quo is normal, just the way you do now.

Pubic agencies can expand or contract as they need to or to survive. no one says,. if you cut our budget, we can no long continue.

The gist of the article is that Carson is lost in the role of HUD Secretary, has his wife and son close to him as he goes about his official duties, and is doing nothing to combat cutbacks planned by OMB that are demoralizing wonderful and dedicated professionals at HUD. Get real. It is silly reporting but may inspire the White House to send over some experienced political and policy types to help Carson get a grip on HUD and develop some tangible reform proposals.

Unlike almost anyone else who has ever held the job, Carson knows that escaping the dead end life of the inner city requires character, determination, and hard work. HUD has never provided anything but maintenance of inner city poverty and cash for its greedy and corrupt ring of contractors. And Carson also knows something that conservatives sometimes lose sight of: the dollars that HUD squanders are a trifle compares to the inner city lives that it squanders.
